New big block engine on the way for the Firebird!!!

After much discussion with Tom Cook, as well as others who have built Firebirds, and finding out about a smoking Florida Jets deal, I have a brand new AMT Netherlands Olympus HP on the way!
This Firebird will be endowed with 57, yes 57 pounds of blow!!!

Oh I can't wait!!!!!!!

haha, not quite.
Shui's backup firebird had the same engine I will be getting, an AMT NL Olympus HP turned up to produce 57lbs of thrust. That airplane achieved a straight and level speed of 323mph. The record setting airplane had an AMT NL Olympus HP that was highly modified to produce 67lbs of thrust. The extra 10 pounds took them to a max speed of 345.18mph, the record speed was an average of upwind and downwind passes at 337mph. It's amazing how much extra thrust is needed for just 10mph more. At the speed of Shui's airplane, it will probably take another 15lbs thrust just to achieve an extra 15mph.
The drag increases exponentially with speed, just like a race car, it's not difficult to build a 12 second car, but shaving just one second off requires a heck of a lot more horsepower

So, while mine won't be a record setter, it will probably be the quickest bird in Canada :P

Re: New big block engine on the way for the Firebird!!!

Well Jeremy, it looks like that until the rest of us find a way to "teleport" our planes down the runway, you will have us all beat. I hope it would never see its demise at full throttle. That would just be scary, 323 mph is about 470 feet per second. Im sure that would put a nice crater in something

Good luck with the new bird. I assume it wont be coming to wingham jets?

Be fun to come to wingham, but I'm just not into a 3500km drive these days haha, not with fuel prices the way they are!
