I am not sure but at one time there was one south of Winnipeg that was flying. Its a little town just north of the border. He had one and was also restoring a Zero that they recovered out of the south pacific. They had quite a few aircraft there and I wish I had taken pictures. I am not sure if the gentlmen is still there since it was in the 70's.Maybe somebody in Manitoba could let us know.

FAIREY SWORDFISH
Kent,the Fairey Swordfish in Shearwater was fully restored to flying condition and has flown a few times in the last decade if not mistaken.Not sure if it has recently as budgets probably are preventing it from happening.Access is easy to the museum and contacting them may get you some of the infromation you are looking for.
Also,in Scale R/C years ago,a modeller from Ontario did a great scale job of this aircraft but will have to go digging for the issue.Give me a few days and I'll let you know what I find. Happy hunting, Ian Gunn MAAC 25307 |

Swordfish thanks
Thanks guys i'm alittle overwelmed at the response on this subject.
My hope is to do the plans in autocad and I will be willing to share them with you guys if your interested in building this plane. The guys that flew these stringbags for real had balls the size of beachballs imagine skimming the waves at 130mph max. and having everything that the ship could fire pointed at you. The torpedo run must have seemed like an eternity. Thanks again guys for all your help. Kent. |

Swordfish
Kent,
The Swordfish at the Shearwater Aviation Museum was completely restored and flown. If you want to learn more, contact Robert LePine. By the way S.A.M. is also working on the restoration to flight status of a Mk 1 Firefly.

Hope the Firefly doesn't end up like the one in England. Crashed at an Airshow (Duxford if I remember correctly) on July 12th. Lost 2 people, pilot and technician. Very sad news. Chris

Kent, first you should do a search ar RCU on "Fairey Swordfish" RAYMAC in Victoria wants to do one as well, maybe you could help each other.
I have a set of the old Complete-A-Pac plans now sold by Traplet in England that I would be willing to loan you. I don't think they are that close to scale. I also have a really nice 3view I could copy and send you. Here's some publications that might help; Swordfish Special by W.A. Harrison Fairey Swordfish by W.A. Harrison Warpaint series No.21 Aeroguide Classics number 4, Swordfish Profile publications No.212 Fairey Swordfish Go to www.abe.com and click on "advanced search" You might find some used copy's of these publications. And finally Aviator Magazine Sept 2001 had an article on a guy named Bob Spence in Muirkirk Ontario who flys a Swordfish he restored himself. That makes 2 flying in Canada. A search for this magazine should turn up a website and back issues. |

Kent;
Checkout the Warbird Resource Group at www.warbirdresourcegroup.org. They are listing 11 swordfish still in existance. Two are presently airworthy, several are ubder restoration. 8 of them came from the Ernie Simmins collection in Tillsonburg, which was broken up after he was murdered. Phil
