Unionville 8' Beaver Body Dimensions
Guys. I am going to build either the 6' or 8' Unionville Beaver. My preference is the 8' but I have some concerns about the ability to fit it in my vehicle. Can someone who has one get me the following information. The height of the model at the rudder. The height of the model at the wing. (from ground to highest point). The length of the model. The width of the model. Thanks.

How about a bolt-on rudder and elevator as an option? Makes getting in and out of the car a lot easier. Especially for the big ones!

Re: Unionville 8' Beaver Body Dimensions
Thanks Dean! It will fit. 8's on order. Will have to create a new rack for the back of the SUV when I am taking the beaver to the field but that is no big deal. Never thought of the stab width. That is almost a wide as some of my smaller planes! Really want to put a 4 stroke up front but the shear cost of a 120 4 stroke may put a stop to that idea. An OS 95AX 2 stroke will be second choice I think. How does it fly in the wind or is it a light wind day bird?

Re: Unionville 8' Beaver Body Dimensions
You may need to bite the bullet and go 4-stroke. I had the 8' Norseman and there were a couple of factors in engine selection I wish I had known before it was built and covered.
First, like a few other scale round engined machines that cowl is rather large diameter so a 2-stroke capable of swinging a prop big enough to be effective would make your fuel consumption go up dramatically. The difference is 4-strokes can swing a much larger prop and sound more scale, as well. If built again I would opt for aileron and flap servos in each panel and move the firewall back enough to add more engine options. ps. Not sure if they have changed some of the design, (built mine in the mid 80's). I found the 1/4 slab stabilizers, controls and fuse bulkheads a bit heavier than required. Built-up tail surfaces and thinner or cut out formers would help a lot when it came to balance and strength.

Re: Unionville 8' Beaver Body Dimensions
I have a 2-stroke Super Tigre 90 with a Pitts muffler in mine. It flies great on this, fairly scale, and with the full cowl it sounds cool. It's not a plane to over power for sure. A 4-stroke would be great, even a 90 should fly it very well. No problem in the wind, it's big and stable. You'll want some rudder input on turns for a nice scale flight. This is an easy flying, visually exciting model, definitely not a performance plane. Enjoy!

Re: Unionville 8' Beaver Body Dimensions
I am wavering between the OS 95AX 2 stroke or possibly the OS 95V 4 stroke at this point. I like to have power when needed but the sound of a 4 stroke would be great for this model.

Re: Unionville 8' Beaver Body Dimensions
Either one would be excellent. I love the 4-stroke sound and, as mentioned, you can swing a bigger prop. A guy in the classifieds has a new Saito 100 for sale, would also be perfect.
You could go nuts and put in a 22cc gasser too, but it would weigh quite a bit more. As I understand it, a 90 size 4-stroke should balance the model per plans just about spot-on. |
