Peerless engine, circa 1935
I had the pleasure of cleaning up a rare bird today. For a collector in the US, one of about 5 known to exist. The peerless - looks like a bigger Brown Jr with a split case. Very crude machining by later standards but nicely made.
I couldnt find a proper fitting spark plug comapred to the usual 3/8 and modern metric stuff (very odd thread, looks like 1/2"-20 - does anyone know if that makes sense). I also could not make a needle for it, as it appears to be a 4-56 thread and I have no die that size. I guess turning one may be an option but not on my lathe... Will take pics before I send it away. Interesting intake design and integral tank /venturi/NV Supposed to be worth about $3K US... made me kind of nervous working on it. The cylinder and crank, and tak were very rusty. I mainy spent hours with emery cloth, scotchbrite and small wire wheels removing the rust and cleaning it up. The timer is pretty neat, with a different style cam than I have ever seen as well. Anyone else ever hear of one/see one? AJC

Gosh, Andy - that engine and I are exactly the same age - does that make me vintage too!! Never seen or even heard of them! Not even an advert in any old mag!

The crank is three piece brazed together, but the con rod is cast bronze. The case has a bronze bush, and there are liubricating holes in various places. Looks well made - but rough. Sideport design like a brown, with a fairly complex cast aluminum piston with three ring grooves. Displacement is almost 1.2 cubic inches, 1 1/8 bore and about an inch and a bit stroke. TALL engine.... long rod. Will take some pics maybe tomorrow. AJC

Hi AJC,
Nice Project ! My Dad will be interested too... Some of those "pre-War" engines were the basis of the '50s' engine development. Long stoke engines last much longer. Take care, Have fun, Dave'crosscheck'Fallowfield Maac 6437 Unabashed Combat Team |

Re: Peerless engine, circa 1935
Please post some pix Andy; I'm fascinated. I remember Col. C.E. Bowden had a fellow, Westbury, modify a large boat engine for him initially in Britain around that time, but my biography of him is gone (I don't lend books anymore!) so I don't know anything more there. I will get out my oldest mags and try and find an advert when I get a chance - they're getting all moldy!!
And will look and see if Aeromodeller '50 Years etc.' books have anything! |

Re: Peerless engine, circa 1935
Here are a few shots of the engine. It looks "rough" - but its all bare steel, and was VERY rusted. Now its all cleaned up and there is just some discoloration. It looks like a 75 year old engine
It is quite large, about 6" high. AJC

The threads in the head look OK - just didnt want to force a tap of the incorrect size through it. I cant source a plug anyway here in Kirkland Lake (which isnt surprising...) but the owner will take care of it. Thanks for the offer though. The engine is American made - thats 100% sure. I made a 3-56 needle and it seems to thread in OK but is very loose. Thats why I though a 4-56 would be the answer. My specialty tap & die catalogue has a tap of that size but no die! Its got to exist, so maybe the guy can get one made up elsewhere. One could make it up on a lathe, however I have change gears for mine only to 40 TPI, nothing finer. I have a lot of "weird" size taps and dies that I have acquired over the past 10 years for reproducing nv's and so forth. Its a shame to have to re-tap somethign that old... only a last resort option if it was meant to be run again. I think this will sit in a collection from now on. AJC

Re: Peerless engine, circa 1935
is it possible the spark plug hole had a adjustable insert with a 1/4 20 plug in it ,may have been a early way of changing compression.thread size seems odd (large)for plugs availible at the time.Roger
