Yes, using exponential can smooth out your controls by making smaller adjustments around center just that, smaller. You can also reverse that by using the opposite expo. If you find your controls don't react quickly enough for you, you can set your exponential to cause bigger throws in a smaller movement of the sticks.

Unfortunately, in racing, I never used my exponential, so I can't remember which way it works between positive and negative exponential. One makes it "twitchier" around center and the other kind of smooths it out around center. Almost like making a bit of a deadzone around the middle, so that your controls don't react too much around the center position, if that makes sense.
