Re: Morane Saulnier A1

That is very nicely done Pat!

To bad you have not made a build thread about it.
To many scale master work in the dark room and very low profile on their making.

Hope more scale master do build thread from the start in the future

Again, congrat's on your wonderfull WWI flying bird Buddy !!!.

Re: Morane Saulnier A1

HI
Guys

Thank you for your compliments. I haven't flown her yet just got finnished last night. I have to make sure all the electrics are good, and it ballances ok. Should'nt be a prob though. Still have to apply the prop decals; and varnish the one side of the prop, and ballance..that should about do it.
I did a partial build over at EZone at RCGroups (Peter Rake/Manzano Laser Works Morane Sauliner A1) I will be doing a prototype build for Peter Rake in the New Yr. It'll be a 45"ws Spowith Swallow, also at RCGroups.
I do have a goodly amount of the build photos I could post, ??? What do ya think ?

Thanks Pat

Re: Morane Saulnier A1

Hi Guys

Ok I'll post the lot that I have over the next few days. These are some of the earliest I have. The thread at RCZone was done as a suppliment to a thread by the Kit Developer"ManZano Laser"
The fuse was a clamshell, and the wing was a strait build with no dihedral.
The Vickers Guns were scratch built from 0.10 styrene sheet and tube, and the covering is Worldtex iron on pre adhesived.
The struts, and there were a lot of em, are light ply and included in the short kit; but had to be shaped. Stained them with Min Wax Special Walnut.
The wraping bands are acctually thin strips on natural masking tap applied befor the shelac. Also imbedded brass wire in the ends to pin to the wing and fuse
The Grapics are from Callie Grapics of NM

Re: Morane Saulnier A1

Hi
The cowl is two light ply rings with a 1/32nd light ply wraper. Gradually smaller 1/8th balsa rings are glued to the front and sanded to shape.
Then I drilled and filed the cooling holes. I applied ZPOXY fiberglass resin to the outside of the cowl, and the inner lip, then applied 3/4oz Hobbyco fiberglass cloth. I let it dry fo 24 hrs and filled the dry glasscloth with spot putty and sanded ........alot.
Then primed, more spot putty and sanding. I used grits from 180 all the way to 600 wet and dry, with primer and putty between each coat except the last.
Be sure to use low load paper, you'll use a lot less.
The rotory engine is an E Flite Nieuport replacement part that I detailed up and weathered a bit
All the painting was done with Rustolium Painters Touch, the only part that was primed was the cowl

Re: Morane Saulnier A1

The fuse was built up with 1/8th X 1/16th stringers ( my balsa wood selection was'nt hard enough and I snaped a lot of em) The front was sheeted with i/16th balsa and filled with Hobbylite Filler an sanded smooth. And the cockpit cut out. To do this I mad templates from card stock, first and marked all the strut and gun locations. I used the same templates to cut out a set of 0.10 styrene sheet decks to be painted and go over the wood deck simulating the metal sheeting of the prototype. I also made the side access hatches from styrene. The exaust pipes are brass tube.

Re: Morane Saulnier A1

The fuse is covered with Worldtex as well, and also painted with Rustolieum. The Metal (plastic) decking and all other important attachment points ie: wings, landing gear, struts ,rudder and elevator and such are attached with GP 30 Min Epoxy. The cowl is held in place with 4 rare earth magnets, and alinement pegs "3 attached 1/8th dowels"
The rudder and elevator use CA type hinges, and are activated by push rods. The prototypes control systems were all internal, so pull pull controls would'nt look right. By using oush rods I could paint them as well as the control horns the color of the fuse that they passed infront of makig them really difficult to see.
