I don't understand timing

I just ordered an ESC and motor from HobbyKing. I havn't recieved it yet, but I got to thinking about the timing feature on the ESC. How do you know how to set it. How do you know if it is set right.

Here's the ESC

Re: I don't understand timing

You do know the ESC you ordered does not have a built BEC right? The receiver requires a separate battery.
Here is a link to the manual for this ESC. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...6X32857X50.pdf

According to the manual and the motor you selected, you require to change the timing to 15 degrees. Factory default is 1 degree. The manual is pretty straight forward, but it does look confusing at first. You need to take your time and get used to listening to the beeps, and tones. Took me a bit, but then I managed to get it.

Re: I don't understand timing

Did not see it in the literature, but if that one is card programmable I would recommend spending the extra few dollars as it makes setting the parameters much easier.

Re: I don't understand timing

I found a manual and read it through. I think I have the timing figured out, but I'm not sure about the PWM setting for a 800kv motor.

And yes I know it doesn't have a bec. I feel more comfortable with a seperate rx battery.

Thanks. George

Red face Re: I don't understand timing

It was mentioned about BEC earlier. I too, feel WAY more comfortable with a seperate battery powering the receiver.

But as the topic says, what is the purpose of timing? Like why do you even need it?

Re: I don't understand timing

I scratchbuilt a VTO Pogo. When I hammered the throttle to take off, the motor squeeled like a stuck pig. I advanced the timing using the card mentioned above and it takes off now without missing a beat. No way to tell which way the timing needs to go other than by experimenting. No need to change it if it accelerates OK.

I bought an old LT 40 and want to convert it to a AP ship. Yes I'm still flying the cap. She's looking a little worse for wear. Had a lot of hard landings etc etc....... I now refer to her as "Patches". Still flys pretty well.
