Re: TopFlite P-51 Giant Assembly

Hi
Beautiful winter evening .

I think that it is time to , back-up a little , and do a good check of what has left to be done , as is , RTR , ( ready to run ) .
I will say everything from the cock-pit rear wall , to the tip of the spinner , is the area that I am relating to :

There are a few items that have yet to be installed , such as : a JR switch ( for the smoke pump ) , a 1400 Mah , 4.8 volt battery ( ignition ) , a fuel button , for the smoke tank , that also needs new brass tubing and stopper .

Conopy trimming has to be added to the finish of the cock-pit , which has to be glued in place ( very lightly with silicone ) . Three cut-outs have to be done to the cowl , the cowl hold down bolts ( 8 ) , and the adjusting guide tubes for the carburetter , which also have to be machined out to excite the cowl , and the last cut-out will be the choke lever , on top of the cowl And finally the canopy has to be screwed into place , and a support mount has to be built to the main servo tray to hold the smoke fuel . The two front trays have to be screwed into place I think........ thats it .A few hours at the most

As for the balance of the aircraft , it is easier to say....... whats done . The wing has been modified , the flaps and ailerons have been installed , and with that said , its not far from a finish , most of the calculating part of the assembly will be complete , its mostly down hill

I think , the idea , that I like the most , right right now ,is the fact that everything comes out of the WarBird ( Except air tank ) . It will be really easy to do the tail feathers , and lets not forget that this bird has NO tail retract, lots of time saved there .

Next............... I will be joining the wings

Later

Michel

Re: TopFlite P-51 Giant Assembly

Hi
Got some work done on the assembly this weekend , but , not the wing . I started by passing the iron on the Monokote to remove all the wrinkles from the covering . I think that I finally have the trick to the Monokote . I used the iron at a very high temperature and worked slowly . I was able to remove almost all the wrinkles that I could find , came out not too bad , better than my last effort .

I hinged the rudder and the elevators , did not take too long . I also cut out the passage for the stab , and checked the fit . While I was in that end of the plane , I decided to check-out the control rods for the rudder and elevators . TopFlite did not disappoint me .................. THEY WERE EXTREMELY STIFF...... unacceptable ......... so I had to remove the guide tubes ( which was not very difficult , they were not glued very well at all ) , and work the excite holes for the guide tubes . At the same time , I made sure that the tubes were exactly the same distance , from the fin . To correct this all that I do is take a round file for a chain saw , and straighten up the holes , so that they meet well with each other , and that the control rods are as free as melted butter .

Have you guys heard the news .............that AeroWorks is coming out with a P-51 . It will be designed around the Da-50r , weigh in at 23-24 LBS . Will have operating inner doors , retracts supplied , as well as a sliding canopy , and the control surfaces are all installed .......... WoW ......... The news is that it will sell for $2000 Canadian (1500 US ) From what I have seen from AeroWorks , should be an interesting look see .

I have received 8 JR 821 servos , this is plenty of torq for this bird , at 6 volts . Unfortunately they did not come with mounting hardware , and the parts have already been ordered .

Re: TopFlite P-51 Giant Assembly

Hi Guys,

If any of you are looking for a True Turn 5 inch P-51 spinner...I have one for sale. I thought I'd let you guys have first dibs before I advertise on RC Canada and RC Universe.

Its PN is TT-5002-B-L, which has the lightened backplate (total weight is advertised at 6.7 oz). It is already predrilled for a DA 50 and 3W motors...it came off a DA-50. I had bought the spinner used from a friend (a few flights on it), but is still a beauty. It was for my TF Giant P-51, but I've decided to modify the cowl for a 5.5" spinner.

It comes with the retainer bolt, but no adaptor kit. A new one is worth $169 USD, so how about $100 USD and I'll pay for shipping to Canada...? Send me a PM if your interested...I can send pics.

Jeff
