Buying USED Planes in the USA

I found allot of good deals south of the border. Has any one ever bought a used plane in the States and brought it across the border. I wondering if you pay duty on a used items and if you do how much would it be. I purchased few small items from e-bay before and never paid any. Of course these are much more expensive and I am aware of the longer you stay the more you can bring over, but is that only on brand new items or used too.
Has anyone have any idea?

Cheers

Re: Buying USED Planes in the USA

I have bought engines and batteries for RC and it all depends on how the shipper marks it. I have bought a saddle and had to pay a shipping and handling charge by canada post but I do not think I paid duty.

I bought a plane I think it was two years ago. Now I did it a little different than most,I went and picked it up. It was in Philedelphia PA. I am thinking about a 7hour drive from here. Made the deal with the guy and got all the info. Did a search on mapquest as I have no GPS(still don't)We left at night and I drove non stop. Well the odd pit stop and munchie break . It is a good thing we went at night as it would have been a nightmare in daylight ,Most of the road was being resurfaced and was tore up for miles, but at night was no traffic. We got to where we needed to be early and waited for the time we had said we would be there. Got the plane paid chatted for a bit and left for the Poconos . stayed there for 4 days(made a holiday of it) Now as we had been down required amount of time and there was three of us we had lots of room on value allowed at the border. We arrived at Niagra falls not sure which crossing but it was reasonable busy and there wher customs guys outside of there booths waving people here and there and us across the border. So no hitch at all

As far as I know there is no duty on model planes.

This link will tell you how much you can bring across the border depending on the length of time you are outside canada.

http://canadaonline.about.com/gi/o.h...f5056-eng.html

If you are over the amount the balance is taxable. They will convert it and the U.S. taxes you paid too into Canadian dollars and then charge you the applicable provincial and federal taxes.

Re: Buying USED Planes in the USA

I'm glad it worked out for you Hilfly.
The planes that I am interested in are in New York State, Indiana and Ohio. So this would be a day trip for me. I'm pretty sure they keep track of your plates so you can't lie on how long you stayed. If I came through few hours later and declared nothing I think they would be suspicious and possibly search me.
I guess I'm just trying to figure out if it's worth it to buy down there.

Does anybody else know?

Re: Buying USED Planes in the USA

There is taxes on a model plane, I have been hit 2 times now from out of the USA. Depends on how much it is worth and if it is used or new.
Any new one, over $50 will be hit, but a used model is not.
But it needs to be clearly marked on the package that it is a USED model plane, gift.

So why not stay down for the weekend . Also as someone has said it is only GSTand PST you will have to pay . If the price is reasonable or what could be considered low by our standards. Make sure you have a printed copy of the listing and a receipt marking it paid. My experience with border crossing customs agents is that if you treat them as a human being and not act like a smart ass. They will be fine with you.Now the other thing is you could pretend you have been to a airplane competition and these planes are yours and you are returning home. Might even help to have a 40 size plane that is a little bent as if you had an accident while at the competition

Re: Buying USED Planes in the USA

I like your way of thinking Hifly. LOL
But your right, $130 of tax on a thousand is not bad if the deal is good, and like you said you could spend a weekend down there.

Yeah the $130 in taxes would almost cover a weekend stay
