50CC Budget Build

So i was talking with a friend last night that i got into flying last year and he's progressed really quickly. Being young, single, and totally into flying with not a lot of other commitments has put him in the position to burn a pile of glow fuel this year. He has watched me fly my gasser and has asked me for some help getting into a gas set up. Here was my idea on doing up a budget build 50CC.

My criteria were as follows:
-products have to be reliable with a proven track record
-keeping the cost down as much as possible.

Here are my thoughts please chime in with yours.....

Airframe - 50CC Yak54 from Peakmodel
Engine - DLE55 from Peakmodel
Servos - TowerPro996 digital metal gear from Hobbycity
Receiver - Hitec Supreme 8 channel (he runs an Optic 6 right now)
Ignition - Spektrum 1500mah 4.8V
Battery - 1 A123 2300 6.6Volt receiver pack from Hobbycity
Switches - Futaba Heavy Duty Switch

So here is the pricing total i came up with:

Yak54 + DLE55 combo 859 USD (approx. 970.00 CAD) (Shipping is free)
Tower Pro996 X 6 = 10.95USD (approx. 87.15 CAD) (shipping included)
Receiver - Hitec Supreme 8 Channel (36.50 CAD) (approx. 10 CAD shipping)
Battery - A123 2300 6.6V (approx. 43.25 CAD) (shipping included)
Ignition - Spektrum 1500mah 4.8V (26.00 CAD) (shipping Included)
Switches - Futaba HD Switch (24.00 CAD) (shipping included)
Servo Extensions - 5 24" HD (approx. 10.75 CAD) (shipping included)
That comes to
1197.66 CAD for a completely new setup. Not to bad at all. I compared the Extra 330 that i bought from GHAir to the Extra330 that peakmodels sell and it has the same specs. so i feel comfortable with the quality as i'm sure they are the same plane judging by the manual. I have ordered from both hobbycity and peakmodels multiple times and have always been happy with everything. Also i have never had to pay any customs on items ordered from these places. There are small things like zip ties velcro and foam padding that i haven't added into the cost as most people have stock like that on hand.

so what do you think???? A decent setup for under 1200CAD!!!

Geoff

Re: 50CC Budget Build

servos seem to be a little lightfor the 50 cc application.

Re: 50CC Budget Build

really? running the same servos on my Hanger 9 Extra 260 with a Turnigy 50cc in it and they are plenty strong and fast.... puts out around 150oz/inch. have them on ailerons and rudder and elevator, haven't had any complaints yet..

Re: 50CC Budget Build

Those Tower Pro Servos should be fine, but you might want to re-consider skimping out on servos. Don't get me wrong, I use alot of HC stuff, but servos are usually one thing that I suggest you stick with well-known and well-tested brands (cheap Hitec 645 or similar would work to start out with).

That's just me, though!

Gas is the way to go that's for sure!!!

How is the centering?

Also I think you are using only one HD switch? What about Ignition switch?

Can the Spektrum 1500 mAh bat and go with 2 x A123 for redundancy and tap off of one battery for Ignition. Use Smart-Fly 5.2v Ignition Regulator, DL only recomends max of 6.0v for their Ignitioin, Also suggest some form of electronic ignition kill like Smart Fly or 42% products.

Would suggest stronger rudder servo as Yak rudders are way bigger then an Extra.

Re: 50CC Budget Build

Servos seem to center just fine, I haven't notice any problems... fast and strong. sure they are cheap, but they work.... I may change my mind if I have a problem with them but so far they are good.... figure no sense in knocking something down if you don't have them so I'm trying them... I know they are way way faster and stronger then my Hitec 635 servos... for the average sport flyer, they should be fine. Just my opinion but then again, I am flying them, are you?

If that comment was directed at me, I am not bashing them, I just asked about centering and suggested stronger servo for rudder. Do what you want but unfortunately you won't know till it's to late with servos.

I agree with other guy DON'T cheapout on servos. There is Budget then there is Geto!

Re: 50CC Budget Build

truthfully, that was the only thing i wasn't sure on, was the servo's... i did some reading on them and i haven't seen much in the way of neg. feedback on them. I know that Aeroworks and Extreme Flight recommend servos over with over 180 oz. of torque but that is if you are doing some pretty heavy 3D flying. I used 7955TG's all the way around on my Extra but i have grand ideas about a 100CC plane in the future too there are also some PowerHD servos out there that guys have been using in 50CC planes with good results.

And yes i forgot the ignition switch and an opti-kill or something of that sort as well.

Re: 50CC Budget Build

Jim we must have been posting at the same time. "Geto" lol love it!!

think about this for a second though.... in the last several years we have seen excellent low budget planes, engines, and radio's... so why not servo's now? It's tough because you put a cheap servo on a .40 size plane and it goes in... ok so a new airframe is $200, and that may be the extent of the financial damages.... smoke a 50CC plane in and it's most likely 3 times that at least.... but were seeing more and more people start to try them out. What did people say about the first DL's that came out? I have read a lot of good things about these Towerpro servos and about the powerHD ones as well.

just my 2C
