Re: Carden PRO Built by Lee
Well moving right along...got the cf ribs inset into the stabs. The sheeting was trimmed after the ribs were fitted in so the sheeting locks in place and I have a balsa edge to cover over. Next up are some pics showing how dead straight the wings turned out. I will finish sand them after the edges are all glued on, but you can see the epoxy has come right to the top of the taped seams.
Next up is setting the incidences for the wings and stabs then things should move along quickly as we finish up the top of the fuse. I'll go over the incidence setting methods in detail for everyone.

Last one of the wing. The root rib will be trimmed after I inset the hardpoints into the foam on the root of the wings.

Will fresh epoxy bond well to the cured epoxy on the CF matt?

Re: Carden PRO Built by Lee
I used probond to glue the root ribs in. I like the fact that it expands and fills in all over and in fact for the first hour it was oozing out and around the stab socket as well so I know I have an excellent bond. Epoxy with micro balloons would work but I rough up the previously cured surfaces so the new epoxy has something to bite into, and the micro balloons would fill gaps with less weight and easier sandability.
Just a preference thing.

Jim... Don't forget that the roots are only bonded to a foam core... The bond only has to be as strong as the foam itself!!! Also, don't forget that there's minimal force on the root cap, especially if there's an anti-rotation pin!! Trev |

Re: Carden PRO Built by Lee
I think a light sanding is required to get the best mechanical bond after its cured. THe reference below may not be totally aplicable but useful info. West has some great fillers in various weights- microlight up to adhesive filler which is very heavy but strong.
http://www.westsystem.com/ss/use-guides/ Your build is really comng along. Beautiful work. Sounds like the probond is more than strong enough. Jason "Cured epoxy- Unless you're using WEST SYSTEM's blush-free 207 Special Clear Hardener, amine blush may appear as a wax-like film on cured epoxy surfaces. It is a by-product of the curing process and may be more noticeable in cool, moist conditions. Amine blush can clog sandpaper and inhibit subsequent bonding, but this inert substance can easily be removed. To remove the blush, wash the surface with clean water (not solvent) and an abrasive pad, such as Scotch-brite(TM) 7447 General Purpose Hand Pads. Dry the surface with paper towels to remove the dissolved blush before it dries on the surface. Sand any remaining glossy areas with 80-grit sandpaper. Wet-sanding will also remove the amine blush. If a release fabric is applied over the surface of fresh epoxy, amine blush will be removed when the release fabric is peeled from the cured epoxy and no additional sanding is required. Epoxy surfaces that have not fully cured may be bonded to or coated with epoxy without washing or sanding. Before applying coatings other than epoxy (paints, bottom paints, varnishes, gelcoats, etc.), allow epoxy surfaces to cure fully, then wash and sand." |

Re: Carden PRO Built by Lee
Well the bond is obviously strong because I had to use a chisel to remove some overglued areas on the back of the tabs! I always pre sand epoxied areas that are being glued to and in this instance I even cleaned with alcohol prior.
The stab le and te are drying and the incidences on the wings are figured out but I have to glue in the ply hardpoints before the final drilling for the wing bolts and anti rotation pins. I'll post some pics later since we have some Christmas baking to do
