Re: Big question please help...EZKOTE

Just EZKote or EZcote and a lightweight cloth?

In my personal experience, I wouldn't just use EZcote. The wood underneath tends to crack, and then you have ths unsightly crack coming up from the coating. Better to use lightweight cloth as well, it will give your wood structire a lot more strength.

I posted an answer on your other thread also recommending the cloth.

Hi Jeff,

Eze-Kote is meant to be used with fibreglass cloth. For that size of model I would use very light cloth (under 1 oz) we have a very nice 0.6 oz cloth for just such an application.
To see how to apply it here are 3 videos on You Tube showing how it's done. (the first 1 is yours truly trying it for the first time)
www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQJ-mkoYQIo www.youtube.com/watch?v=yP05qv3QtUk www.youtube.com/watch?v=32yNfp1EUzU
Hope these help!

Eze-Kote will add about 1% of the total aircraft weight once complete.
If you have any further question PLEASE e-mail me directly at chris1@ontarioadhesives.ca

Re: Big question please help...EZKOTE

Wow you guys are such a help!!! So how many square yards of that cloth would I need? and i looks pretty easy, just one coat of the cloth? I will be powering it with a saito 100 I'm sure there will be plenty of power, just shooting for a great scale project... and since I have you all here the next hardest part will be the painting any tips? Thanks so much

Re: Big question please help...EZKOTE

I'm running a Top Flite Harvard that I resurrected from our local flying club wall:

https://www.rccanada.ca/rccforum/showthread.php?t=116111

Plane weighs in at 10 1/2 lbs and has an OS 91 Surpass mounted. Pulls it along really well, so I would think your Saito 100 should be fine unless it ends up weighing considerably more.

Re: Big question please help...EZKOTE

Jeff,
Yes, 1 layer of fibreglass cloth. 1 coat of Eze-Kote under to seal the wood, 1 coat to attach the cloth and as many coats as you require to fill the weave (usually 2-3)

Re: Big question please help...EZKOTE

I just finished glassing my 1/6th scale spitfire and it took three packages of cloth with each package being a square yard. I have a bit left over, but I would say get four to be safe. I too was worried about extra weight, and so far it has not added too much weight. That is with 1/2oz cloth and three coats of ezkote

I agree with the above posters, Ez kote has made my first real glassed plane a breeze to do and ended up with fantastic results.
