RCAF DH2 Beaver?????

On the RCAF web site they list the Beaver as one of the aircraft that the RCAF used. I can't find any info. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: RCAF DH2 Beaver?????

Let me do some digging Mike. I know we used the Otters, then much later the Twin Otter, but can't recall any Squadron using the Beaver. Wondering if someone lumped CG, TC, or some other Gov't agency in with RCAF.

Re: RCAF DH2 Beaver?????

So far, other than the US, the fol used the Beaver for military purposes:
Other military users that obtained the Beaver in small to moderate numbers included Argentina, Australia, Austria, Cambodia, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Finland, Ghana, Haiti, Indonesia, Iran, Kenya, South Korea, Laos, the Netherlands, Oman, Peru, the Philippines, Thailand, Turkey, Uruguay, Yugoslavia, and Zambia. Ironically, the RCAF never demonstrated much interest in the type. A total of 1,657 Beaver Is was built into the early 1960s.

Although not ordered by the RCAF, some 980 served with distinction in the US Army and US Air Force. About 1600 were made.

Doesn't look good for an RCAF Beaver. Funny we never showed interest.

Re: RCAF DH2 Beaver?????

If I recall, the RCAF did not buy any DHC-2's.
They had Norseman and Otters though.
I'll look through a book here to confirm that. I seem to remember the story had some political twist to it.

Re: RCAF DH2 Beaver?????

It would be interesting to know the story behind us never using the Beaver!

Re: RCAF DH2 Beaver?????

Hello There:

At that time period we still had a number of Mk-6 Norsemen. These were operated by
408 Squadron at Rockcliffe. The Otter was available in 1953, these were better suited for the role of 408, which was mapping the North. I had the pleasure of accepting the first Otter at Downsview in 1953, This was flown back to Rockcliffe and became part of the CEPE fleet which I was a part of.

Re: RCAF DH2 Beaver?????

I have found numerous references that the Otter was original called the King Beaver.

Re: RCAF DH2 Beaver?????

Was a member of 402 City of Winnipeg Sqdn (fitter) when the Otter was taken on strength, Had a lot of good times and got great experience during those days. Missed out on the float ops tho. They came after my civvie job got in the way. Good times for sure, and a great aircraft.

I find it interesting to hear a number of you talking about your experiences with the real planes. It somehow brings life to them.
