Finally got to experience ailerons for real!

Hey guys,

So today marked a milestone in my flying experience, I flew a plane with ailerons for the first time today. just got in about 15 min ago.

So i had bought a Used AXN Floater off of a family friend. So today i took it out for its first spin. I take off and think "this thing is a pig!" it was so slow and could only maneuver under quite high speeds which i didnt want to have it "pinned" the whole time.

So later today I went out again. This time with my brother who flew my firebird stratos. I just got fed up with this PIG! and it was only the FIRST DAY! so out came the exacto knife and i cut about 6 inches off the wing tips. and NOW WOWZA! she can move! great little trainer plane now! has speed can do victory rolls and still has the broad wingspan to allow soft gliding landings!

Needless to say im VERY happy with this plane now. and i would suggest anyone wanting to learn the basics and then move up go with this plane as it is both all you need is a knife!

Re: Finally got to experience ailerons for real!

Dale: am I to understand you turned your AXN for a floater to a maneuverable machine just by removing the wingtips? That is cool if so. And yes, I like the idea of being able to recommend this to a beginner with the idea that he can improve the plane's maneuverability later by lopping off some wing-tip.

Can you post any pictures, please??

Re: Finally got to experience ailerons for real!

here are the Before and After pictures of my plane, I will need to go from the standard 5 inch prop to a 6 inch, as when you lop the wing tips off it doesn't have as much lift.

And Max: you are correct, its really great now, there are some videos on youtube showing some people with them and flying.

I just realized the previous owner of the plane had the prop on backwards so it would still work but the pitch wasn't as aggressive! and the angle of the prop is rounded on the back making the effective surface area actually affecting the wind about 60% of the whole surface. I'm flying tomorrow again so ill post and let you know the improvements.

Thanks for the pictures, Dale.
That plane looks so different without the wingtips. It kinda looks like a jet now

Re: Finally got to experience ailerons for real!

Wow, that was a bold move taking off that much wing tip...... I remember back in the day the clipped wing piper cub by CG was a much better plane with clipped wings rather than the full wings..
On another note don't be afraid to try different props (making sure you don't pull too many amps, I find props make a world of difference. I love apc props for the smaller planes

the new prop will have a higher pitch speed and will have more torque... assuming the motor is capable of handling it - at the same voltage level.

As someone stated earlier, you should hook up a wattmeter in series with the battery in your system _as_ you are playing with prop combinations. If you go too big with a prop you can actually burn (/ melt) the windings in your motor and/or damage the ESC.

A wattmeter is probably one of those indispensable things if you're playing with non-stock setups. Hobbyking has one that works for me - just as one of many examples - here's the link:

There are many others.... some are no doubt better. Either way... they are invaluable.

Cheers, and have fun!
