Small dune for sloping - is worth trying?

I found today a little hill few minutes from my house and I am wondering it is worth trying with a weasel or similar glider?

The picture is old, there is a park there now and the hill is actually a couple of feet higher now.

It is facing NW and the wind was blowing 20KM/h from NW 2 hrs ago.

This one would be good only if those buildings were not so close: http://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ll=...09.68,,0,15.72

Re: Small dune for sloping - is worth trying?

it looks a little small, but maybe doable from the side with no houses. The only way is to try it. You can also "check out" potential slope sites with a small motor glider with light wing loading (I have a Gentle lady with a small motor for that). The motor will allow you to find the lift band and map the hill quickly ... but probably not necessary for that hill. Alula and Weasel prefer lighter winds ..but again, you don't know 'till you try.

BTW, the preferred hill in your area is Centennial Park ski hill. That one works real well with a South wind. Airport authority bothered me once, so keep it low.

Re: Small dune for sloping - is worth trying?

I just checked Centennial Park on Google and it looks really good (compared to anything else in the neighborhood). Thanks for the tip

Yes, the Gentle Lady is a great bird for finding low lift. I just started scratch building one for
that very same reason. I was thinking of posting a build thread if there is any interest. Also,
what is a good motor ( same old question)?

I have a 2m Goldberg Electra with a brushless system (brushed - brushless conversion thread coming soon) that has more than enough power:

- motor (read the reviews - many used it in 2m powered gliders): http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...idProduct=2106
- 11 x 6 Prop: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=13175
- 3s 2200mAh
- 40 A Mistery ESC: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...idProduct=9482

Hi Florin,

Thanks, but the weblink you give for the motor says "this item no longer available" ?

Re: Small dune for sloping - is worth trying?

When looking for a good hill to fly off of keep in mind that air not only moves up and over an object, It will also go around it. Width of the face of the hill is as important as it's height.

2 cents worth
