Re: Almost lost the plane - twice

What you have here is classic ""Loss of lift" on one wing due to the interference of the airflow over the wing. This interference was caused by the loose red trim tape, which when fluttering over the airfoil, caused that wing to lose some or all of its lift generating capability. This VERY EASILY explains the spiraling. Any plane flying straight and level has an equal amount of lift being generated by BOTH wings. If you increase the lift on one side and reduce the lift on the other (which is what the ailerons do) then the plane banks over. The fluttering trim had the same effect. By killing the lift on one side of the wing, the asymmetrical lift caused by the imbalanced lift capacity and caused the plane to bank over. The "Spiral" was probably caused by the pilot Florin giving "UP" elevator in a desperate attempt to save his plane. As for WHEN the trim flutter occurred, it depended on the nature of the material, its thickness and position on the airfoil. It just so happened to be in such a position that when the plane was at the right angle of attack and velocity that it would start to flutter. Being a degenerative problem,(left to its own devices, the amount of "loose" trim would gradually increase, changing its resonant frequency) So at first it happened at high speed and high angle of attack. Later on, as the trim continued to loosen, it could very well have happened even in level flight. Solution: Pull off the Trim (or re-stick it down if you dare) and fly like nothing's happened. I'll bet you can do all the inverted high-speed dives and it will never happen again as long as the airfoil stays "clean"
