Re: Spektrum DX7s at G.H.
Well guys, my education continues;
I just read a glowing review of the Spectrum DX8 (and by extention the DX7) and I thought that I'd share it with you. http://www.rcmodelreviews.com/dx8dsmxreview.shtml The reviewer has an impressive resume and is independant (paid by no manufacturer) so - theoretically impartial. He has done a number of reviews - feel free to explore his website and give me an opinion on his work. Happy Landings!

Re: Spektrum DX7s at G.H.
Hello BBBAir
Welcome to the wonderful world of the many choices. The reviewer dumped on DSM2 because DSM2 uses two 'clear' channels and sticks with them. His big complaint is that the two channels under some conditions could be very close. This he deemed a bad thing. A whole bunch of us in Kingston have been using DSM2 for years without problems. Now that DSMX is with us in the Dx7s, Dx8, 9503, 11X, and 12X this is not a concern anymore. One of the more important things to decide in my mind is the type of A/C or Helli you want to end up with. In my particular case I really like flying A/C with flaps. Flaps that can also act as ailerons to improve roll rate. So I flip a switch and the flaps go up and down in unison with the ailerons. Flip the switch and the flaps go to take off position. Flip the switch again and they go to landing position. This requires four channels. So with this four and one for rudder, one for elevator, and one for throttle there goes seven channels. I always have two servos on the elevators with each a separate channel. There goes eight channels. I have some large gasoline powered A/C that I have an ignition cut off on. That makes the total nine. The point of all of this is to try and determine what type of A/C you would like to end up with. In my humble opinion the RF link is not so much of a concern any more no matter which brand you get, they are all good I think. One more issue is how the Tx feels. You are apt to hold this thing in your hands a lot. Go to the LHS and hold the Transmitters in your hands to check out the feel. Most radios allow the sticks to be adjusted keep that in mind. I have big hands and the first thing I do with a new radio is extend the sticks to the max. Anyway good luck with your choice..... Last edited by cloudniner; 01-10-2012 at 08:18 PM. |

I was about to pick up an ASSAN Module and when I saw the limited use of the frequency spectrum that it used plus it's LACK of Frequency Hopping capability - I backed away. The same is true for the low end Chinese radios and H. King products, do they work? Yes!, but not all the time. If price is a major consideration and you only fly small inexpensive AC north of Bancroft - they are just fine. The major brands are rock solid and you pay for the quality. As to the difference between JR, Futaba, Hitec etc ... we can be here all day... So... my education continues and my decision ... is coming.

Re: Spektrum DX7s at G.H.
Hi again.
I had my JR 12X converted to DSMX as soon as the mod became available. I like to fly at the large IMAA event in Kingston. One Hundred and six pilots. Just made me feel more secure with the DSMX mod while flying my expensive A/C. When I indicated the RF link is okay I just (sorry) assumed the Spektrum, Futaba, JR, Airtronics stuff available in the LHS. Personally I would never buy anything other than JR because none of it is made in China. Just my hang up and no I don't want to get into a big discussion about that. I don't really care what others use. I know what I like I am sticking with it. |

Re: Spektrum DX7s at G.H.
And then there is Airtronics who has never has an issue with their FHSS signal system bar non. They only offer 5,6,8 and a 10 channel and the SD-10G is my favorite . A lot depends just what you want for programming , how eazy it is to program and dependability . Everyone talks about all this upgrading , software upgrads fixes and so on ; well the ATX has had none of these issues on 2.4 as they did their design and developement so all you had to worry about was flying. AND before I get jumped on; yes, some of the SD-10G's had their RF board replaced as some had sporadic interference when using their FHSS-1 receivers ( no issues with the designed FHSS-3 receivers for the SD-10G) . They had that issue handled in about a month or so . All their other radios operated trouble free and rock solid. There is a mail order dealer in Ontario that has great pricing. Check it out and if you need his email pm me. Thats my nickle for today.
