Since there are some computer genius's in our midst.......

How can I stop pop-ups?? They are driving me crazy!!!! I have tried a few free products, but they don't do a good job, so I am hesitant to send them money for a "Pro" edition ......... Any recommendations? What should I look for?

Just to relate this to RC...that is pretty much all I do on my home computer is check out RC sites, yet I get dogged by ads for cars, credit cards, casinos, mortagages, guess the colour, classmates, etc... Enough already!!!

I hear the latest Netscape browser has the option to disable pop-ups...

It sounds like you have a third party program attached to your browser. I us to have one called xupiter attached to mine. No idea on how it attached itself but I got rid of it by editing my system regestry and deleteing everything that had that name in it.

If your browsing RC Canada you should never get any pop ups.

I know there are various 3rd party utilities that will stop a lot, but not all. Norton Internet Security I believe has a setting for pop ups and you can also add ads to them so intheory they don't show up again.

Also, some sites won't work if the pop ups don't appear. Same as if the cookies are disabled.

I good program to have is Adaware or Spybots {unsure on the last one}(free spyware killer utitliy that searches registry for hidden trackers)

If you don't like pop ups, never visit www.warez.com. It is a hackers site for free software, but you get killed with pop ups. Less hassle to buy the program.

Try using Crazy Browser. It uses IE as it's base and is an excellent pop-up killer. Also it looks nicer than IE (I think)!

Ditto on Fodder's "Ad Aware" located at http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

The free version makes you run it manually. If you want it to run automated, the you can buy a license. This may or may not be the cause of your pop-ups but is worth a try.

Also make sure that you have opted out of Double Click. http://www.doubleclick.com/us/corpor...asp_object_1=& Scroll down to option 2 and select the opt out link. This is a registered spyware cookie that gathers your surfing habits supposedly at an aggregate level and at times produces ads. The US gvmt forced them to supply the "opt out" feature. This will still leave the cookie on your machine but it tells the doubleclick servers not to transmit any of your data to them. Ad-aware will find this and call it spyware so just tell ad-aware to leave that file alone once you have opted out; otherwise you'll have to do it again.
