Yes i could have used equal arm would have have given me 33% more resolution. But; 1) i only use seacraft v2/v3 arms. Think they start at 1". I just like them! 2) its hard enough to setup at 1", i can barely get hands and tools in there now to do the setup now, 3/4" just makes it harder. 3) i am using a saxox 1251 servo, 4096 resolution, with a radio with 4096 res, for about 135deg of travel. I am using about 95 deg of that travel for my throttle. so theoretically 2800-2900 steps. Firstly, the carb barrel on our engines, mechanically doesn't justify that level of control. Second there is no way my brain and my thumbs can come close to that in realtime!!! 4) there is far too much mechanical noise due to linkage flex and connector/connection slop to justify going after every last scrap of servo/radio resolution. Quite frankly, it makes me laugh when i see a throttle linkage wiggling laterally like a guitar string in some of our planes!!!! Or even better, a throttle linkage with a Z-bend at the one or both ends!!! Fix the vibs, you might be able to use half the resolution you theoretical have, you will make your servos last longer, and lower the current they draw. 4) my throttle is as close to electric motor/esc linear. it works for me. You've seen it.

Re: Some winter flying today
I agree, they probably absorb/dampen some of the vibration. But they also reduce the system resolution one can obtain, they are part of the slop.

Re: Some winter flying today
How can a servo arm be sloppy. I've used the long hitec one on 30cc elevators for year. Those thick black hitec arms don't flex!

If its rigid it doesn't absorb or dampen vibration. Cant have it both ways. Think you would be surprised what is happening in terms of bending and flexing for a 1" stock nylon arm on a throttle where a steel rod or all-thread or Ti linkage is vibrating enough that you can see it!!!.

Re: Some winter flying today
OK, all i am saying is; no matter what solid material you use in a servo arm, you don't absorb vibration or dampen it, unless there is flex/twist/stretch. Its called thermal elastic dampening. The elastic deflection of a material where vibrational energy is converted to heat. No slop no dampening! Anything we do reduce vibration transferred from the motor to the servo gears via dampening, also reduces our effective control resolution.

Re: Some winter flying today
Have you guys seen how some connect the servo arm to the throttle linkage via a cable?!! The spring on the carb arm fights against the cable so the servo is just fighting spring tension.
Seems that a number of guys like doing it this way and no issues! I'm thinking about doing it on my MVVS190 / Carden! My MVVS190 with twin carbs has some decent spring return tension and I would think with a good servo you can get this set-up to be very high resolution. Would sure be lighter |
