Anyone using the Futaba GY240 gyro with Ailerons?

Recently bought some GY240 rate gyros to try in my EDF jets. Has anyone experience with this gyro in a plane to help with the ailerons (in gusty conditions)?
There is an AVCS position and wondered if anyone has tried it, or if there is an advantage to using it?
Thanks Eric

Re: Anyone using the Futaba GY240 gyro with Ailerons?

Turns out AVCS means heading hold in Futaba speak. I was under the misinterpretation that the GY240 was strictly a rate gyro. If AVCS is selected, it becomes a HH gyro (not the setting I want for aileron use).
I will try it in my 90mm F18 to see how well it works and will post my results (once the snow clears).

Re: Anyone using the Futaba GY240 gyro with Ailerons?

I haven't tried those. I did try the Orange 3 axis gyro and found the plane reacted sluggish on the controls. All I really want is to stop the wing rocking of gusty days (if the plane will still feel responsive).
I may also try one on the nose wheel steering.
Cheers

If all you want is to prevent wing rocking on a windy day with conventional ailerons, the cheap $9 HK gyro does the trick. I have tried the Eagletree Guardian 2D3D on my XB-70 and on my HK F-104, mostly on 2D mode which means it brings the plane back to a horizontal position (or any position you program in for that matter) when you let go the sticks. All I can say is that it is truly amazing. Landing is sooo much easier. The F-104 was pretty much unflyable even with an aileron gyro, with the 2D3D its a pussycat, albeit with wing mods. Got to be very careful when programming, the inverse settings on the unit do not show up on the computer screen. Failure to check control surfaces visually before takeoff by moving the airplane around cost me an F-18 which bored a 12 inch hole in the ground.

HK has come up with a Turnigy flight stabilizer which also includes altitude hold, GPS and return to home. All this for $70 bucks but a bit too heavy for my jets.

Re: Anyone using the Futaba GY240 gyro with Ailerons?

I tried the Turnigy TG380 for simple nose wheel stabilization but the trim centering would change dramatically through the flight. Completely useless gyro IMHO.
I'm trying the Futaba GY240 because of the quality. They are a pretty affordable rate gyro on the used market as Heli gyros have advanced more in the HH department.
If we keep getting warm weather the F18 may have a chance to fly soon.

Re: Anyone using the Futaba GY240 gyro with Ailerons?

I've used a Futaba 401's on ailerons and rudder. No problem. Just make sure you plug the aux port into a spare channel so 1) you can set gain and 2) switch it off in flight if the gain is set too high. Otherwise a gain feedback loop can rip your ailerons off.
Always start with a low gain and slowly increase it each flight, assessing the feel of the gyro.

Nowadays, there are better options than using a Gyro. Spektrum makes an RX with in flight-stabilisation. Eagletree makes a good stand-alone stabaliser too, already mentioned in the posts above mine. I used an Eagltree stabiliser on one of my FPV planes and it made my flights and landings rock-steady.
