HK BAE Hawk- CG location?

Remove this ad - become a site supporter!
I have a build thread on an HK BAE Composite (1140mm) Hawk. The HK web site says the CG is 105mm from leading edge at fuse - The construction manual says 280 mm from center line then 60-65 mm back from leading edge. These two coordinates differ by 10-15mm of cord - That's allot for a jet!

Can anyone (who has built and flown this jet) give me the actual cg location references. . .

FYI; The build thread (mod-comp-hawk) will continue but the production model (That I have) has numerous build problems: Wing doesn't mate to fuse -10mm down elevators jam on side of fuse etc-etc.

I need a cg location I can rely on before continuing..
I'd appreciate it. Thnx//g.

Re: HK BAE Hawk- CG location?

Not sure if they are compatible, but this is what I have for my Eflite model:

Quote:
The recommended Center of Gravity (CG) location
for the BAe Hawk is 3 1/8 to 3 9/16-inch (80 to 90mm)
back from the leading edge of the wing. Mark the
location for the Center of Gravity on the top of the
wing next to the fuselage as shown.
When balancing your BAe Hawk, support the plane
inverted at the marks made on the top of the wing with
your fingers or a commercially available balancing
stand. Adjust components as necessary so the model
hangs level or slightly nose down. This is the correct
balance point for your model. You might find you may
be required to add a small amount of weight to either
the front or back of the fuselage to achieve the correct
balance.
After the first flights, the CG position can be adjusted
for your personal preference.

Re: HK BAE Hawk- CG location?

Thanks for the input but I wouldn't feel confident using an Eflite C of G on a HK 90mm composite hawk. //g.

Re: HK BAE Hawk- CG location?

Sorry, did not mean to use those specs directly, just to give some idea based on their dimensions where the CofG would be. Since the Eflite is 35.4" long, (381mm) thought you may be able to scale it to yours.

If I could figure out how to save and post the pic from their manual in .pdf would give you some idea of where it is located in respect to the fuse and wing.

Re: HK BAE Hawk- CG location?

There's 350 pages of (Hawk) reading - Quite a bit of useful data. Should be able to move forward now.
Thanks for your input E. //g.

Re: HK BAE Hawk- CG location?

The first post shows his CG and he made some successful flights. You might even be able to PM him with some build questions.
Best of luck!

Re: HK BAE Hawk- CG location?

I hope you don't plan to fly off grass as the high flying speeds needed for this jet will create very high forces on the retracts and mounts. Something will have to give when it is subjected to high forces.
