What Do You Think

I recently purchased a Thunder Tiger Super Cub EP Trainer plane and had no luck in flying this at all. All attempts ended in me crashing and repairing. I think the last crash finally did her in as it seems that I cannot eben get a stable hand launch and little response from the single stick controler. What I see wrong here is that the only flight control comes from the rear with no servors on the main wings.

I have since purchased a Thunder Tiger OBL40 which is much bigger and a transmitter from Airtronics (VG600)

I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with either of these whether good or bad and would they care to share.

I am basically new to this. I just ordered a Simulation Cable to allow me to pratice online. Does this really help. I am just thinking that praticing with a simulator does not give you the true life flying conditions. Again any input on this would be nice.

Thanks
Chris

the best thing for you to do is join a club and get an instructor. most clubs offer free instruction. flight sims are OK, but they don't teach you all the stuff you need to know.

Don't underestimate the value of practicing on a flight simulator!!!

Case in point: A fellow joined our club last year and had never actually flowen a real RC aircraft before that first day at the field. Before he had completed his first flight, he had taken off by himself, flew the box perfectly, did figure 8's and landed it safely.....all on his very first flight ever!

He had spent the whole previous fall, winter, and spring flying a G2 flight simulator which taught him all the co-ordination necessary to handle the plane the way he did on that first flight. A month from the day he started, he was given his wings. ( He wanted them earlier but I felt he just needed the time to fully get into the routine of doing his range checks, pins on the board and just getting use to the edicate and field regulations.)

This past summer he was flying a 28% fully aerobatic airplane with a DA50 gas engine and was doing very good until....he let an inexperienced pilot fly his plane.

If he is any example, I say that flight simulators do work! Not that everyone will have the same success but it just goes to show that with some natural ability, the strong desire to succeed and simulator help, he's become a good pilot in a very short time!

Gary's example is rare and remember he did receive flight instruction from a qualified instructor which no sim can give. There is a big difference between hitting the "Reset" button and having to rebuild after a crash, as you have found out. You still should go the instructor route unless you like spending money.

You aren't flying alone are you? Very dangerous and not much fun.

Burmese where are you located? Any clubs around? Are you buying your stuff from a hobby shop or off ebay .

A hobby shop should be able to hook you up with a club where you can get instruction and make some new friends.

In terms of your first question, I own a VG600 and it makes a good basic radio. I've never had any issues with it in terms of range and whatnot, flawless performance (just not too fancy )

In Response To Your Reply's

Thanks to all for replying I will be attending a club meeting located in Halifax Nova Scotia this coming Tuesday and will be attending a club meeting the following Tuesday in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. Both clubs are reconized clubs and require a MAAC to join which is in the process now.

I assumed that a Flight Sim would not be the same as real flight but I am hoping that it will help with my hand eye control of the transmitter. Once I have this down then I feel the next step would be an instructor. Having some hand eye practice would help me 100%.

As I am just getting into this hobby I did not want to spend a firtune on planes to find out that I was not that interested after all. The Thunder Tiger OBL40 Electric and the VG600 has set me back almost a $1000.00 as it satnds. My practice Thunder Tiger Super Cub EP has set me back Just over $300.00 with a single stick controler (do not like controler).

Once I master the art of flying and have my wings I will be moving up to a bigger plane and maybe even gas.

I am hooked

Chris, I am in almost the exact same situation as you. I'm quite new to RC planes. Not new to RC though, as I used to race Buggies 15 years ago. However I had nobody and didn't know of anybody around to teach me how to fly. But a co-worker had a brother in law that was into it. So he had given me his email address and he had given me a few pointers on the best way to go about getting into it. As he doesn't live around me so I couldn't get together with him.

So at his advice I bought an RTF trainer to start, but first flew on a sim for a couple months to get an idea of how the plane is supposed to react. I never once had a bad crash. Mind you I did have to cut down a tree and go searching in the woods. Just dumb decisions on my part. To windy! But I found the trainer super easy to fly as long as you use common sense. So I got bored of that really quick, and figured it was on to a plane with ails. So 30 sheets of Depron and a bundle of Bluecor and I haven't stop building. I actually found that planes with ails were a bit easier to fly and much more fun. Much more responsive. But however I have had a couple bad crashes teaching myself some basic 3D. I don't get a bit frustrated with crashing though. I think I have to much of an obsession with building. But it is much nicer to bring your plane home in one piece then in pieces.

So as of now I am looking at getting a membership to MAAC and going to join a club. The only downside to that is the closet one is a little over an hour away. But to get instruction from seasoned flyer's will be well worth the drive.

Joining a Club

Well I went to the Club meeting last night and it looks preety much as expected. A place to fly, people to instruct, and a good time. So it looks like I will be joining.

I am waiting for my simulator cable to come, it should be here in a few days. So with this in hand and some flight instructions I just might get off the ground.

One thing I did notice from talking with a few clubs though, is it seems to me that clubs are not fond of having Park Flyers fly in there fields. Most seem to favor glow. As a matter of fact the one club meeting I was at said they would not give wings to those how flew Park Flyers though they are still welcome to join there club.
