I have the option to use two different motors:

1. Scorpion motor, S-4035-330Kv

2. Hacker Motor A60-16L 168Kv

I am currently in the build of my Eflite Beast 60e
I am new to electronics and I'm not sure which motor to use for the Beast. I have these two motors available to me ( at home right now)
I will be using a Phoenix edge 75 8s 34v max 5a bec.

Can someone please give me some advice. Also, do I require a switch from ESC to the motor? or can I get away with a normal setup?

I just went through what your going through and I had to do some homework to figure out what would work best.
I see your plane listed on Eflite so I would suggest you use what they call for.

Ditto the resource links Randy suggests.

I ran both motors and the plane specs thru the ecalc's plane performance program and the Scorpion is the better choice, allowing you to avoid going to a three bladed 17" prop or bigger diameter, 19", 2 bladed prop, as well as opening up the option of dropping down from an 8cell to a 6cell battery pack, if you wish.

I would recommend that you take out a subscription to ecalc or similar program (ecalc plane is $1.50 U.S. for a month to 5.50 for a year) as it gives you a very wide range of flight and safety indicators for any combination of plane, battery, prop, esc specifications you want to input. The restricted demo version of ecalc is fine as demonstration of how it performs but the range of included inputs in each category of battery, esc and prop is limited.

Also, you may want to include in requests for similar advice the basic specifications of the plane (in this case, a bipe, 1100 sq. in. wing area; 8.5 to 9.5 pounds all up weight, suggested prop 17x7e) so that people wanting to help - and are not already familiar with the plane - don't have to dig up this needed information.

Agree with Michael , Scorpion is the way to go as a very efficient motor.

If you go to the Innov8tive Design website and check out the Scorpion motors they also have a prop chart with different suggested prop brands and sizes with specific cell count. I pretty much use Scorpion motors in all my aircraft and find by going up one size in motor size ie 4020 to a 4025 with similar kv rating, you usually use less amps for the same prop size. As suggested Ecalc is a good starting point . I would suggest that for rule of thumb , is keep the kv up and cell count down. As higher cells count add weight and dollars. Higher battery capacity is better in some cases. The other thing is what sort of run time did you want ?

I have found that the less you make the motor work the longer the run time.

Never put a switch between the ESC and the motor, not required ,and you won't find a switch to handle the amps. Usually you will find switching into an ESC because of shortcoming within the ESC design itself. Don't know of any Castle Creations aircraft ESC's that use switches . Switches may be used to shut down the ESC to prevent the ESC from starting the motor when battery pluggd in. That is another whole , why and how article.

I use an ON/OFF switch in all my installs of 4 cells and up. The switches I use are aircraft type from Aircraft Spruce (Brantford ON). They are rated at 75 amps. Using a switch in my opinion is a must safety feature. You can hook your battery up knowing the system is not LIVE until you turn it on.

What brand and model of ESC are you using and battery current draw at full power ?

You can simply the process a little by zoning in on the power level you want.
The general rule is 150-180 Watts/pound for 3D (200+ W/lb for pure vertical).

Assume the maximum weight of 9.5lbs

As a starting point, we can look at the recommend setup (Power 60, 6S, 17x7E)
I can find posted Wattmeter tests showing WOT at 74A, 1280 Watts (or 135 W/lb)
That'll fly.. but that seems a little low for the 3D nature of the Beast.

Conveniently, Scorpion posts the Prop Data for your motor

It shows ranges like:
19x10e on 6S for 1394 Watts at 64A (146 W/lb)
15x10e on 8S for 1576 Watts at 56A (165 W/lb)
16x10e on 8S for 2038 Watts at 73A (215 W/lb)
13x8e on 10S for 1764 Watts at 51A (185 W/lb)
14x7e on 10S for 2845 Watts at 81A (300 W/lb)

If it were me, I'd go 16x8e on 8S with the Scorpion. (Plenty of power and lower than 73A)
16x10e sounds fun and your CC 75 says it can handle 75 continuous amps at WOT.. but I don't think the Beast needs this kind of power.

Basically, just run the scorpion on 8S on play with props from 15x10e all the way up to 16x10e)

But... if you promised to take a video... I'd recommend a wide open flyby using a 14x7e on 10S.
