Need help with radio set up
I decided to try helis and bought a used Blade 400. I have a Futaba 6EXP for airplanes or helis. Everything is connected properly and I have the basic radio settings done - forward, backward, left, right, main blade pitch and rear rotor pitch respond appropriately. I have the swash plane set for 3-5.
What I need help with are the trim settings etc. I have the throttle curve and pitch curve set, but don't know about gyro mixing, SW-T settings, expo settings etc. Any advice sould be greatly appreciated. |

Re: Need help with radio set up
Can you tell us about the setup a litte more, like what gyro, ESC, etc, or is it all stock?
When you say you have the head setup for 3-5, do you mean 3 degree's cyclic and 5 degress collective? Even for a beginner I would stick go with 5 cyclic, and 8-10 collective. You'll require 3-4 degress on collective to even hover depending on your headspeed. Dial in your expo to get a softer feeling around center, but you'll still have the authority in the head to correct yourself if you need to get out of a jam. Don't worry about gyro mixing at this point, but if your using the stock gyro that comes with the Blade, I never had much luck with it back in the day. |

Re: Need help with radio set up
It's all stock except for a HiTech rear rotor servo. I know that the 3-5 swashplate setting is correct, according to research I've done on line.
I just want to make sure that when I spool it up the first time that it doesn't go berserk...as long as I've got the settings reasonably close it should be good. It has training gear and came with a bunch of spare parts. |

Re: Need help with radio set up
One thing that can come out and bite you is the gyro direction setting. If it is in the wrong direction any correction the gyro sends out will simply and quickly magnify the turn.
The gyro has ultimate control on what the tail servo does. You simply "Ask" it to change direction with a rudder input. How aggressive it is in correcting aberant heading changes is a function of gain value, so if it's low it will not work very hard and allow the tail to wander. If too high it can overcompensate, creating bounce at the end of a heading change or wag on its own without any input from you. Other than CCPM used to accomplish the swash function, most other mixing is turned off. A common one, REVO, was originally used to help compensate for differences in torque as your power input and main rotor pitch changed. All that is accomplished with a good gyro now and as long as you have adequate head speed should work fine. On a final note: the thrust from the tail rotor will make the heli move sideways unless you add control or trim for it. Most helis will do a stable hover with the right skid lower than the other since it hangs like a pendulum below the main rotor.
