Re: COMP-ARF 2.3M Extra 330SC / DA 60 build!

Well not a single post from outta the box to completion lol..

Anyways, 2 well spent days and it would complete this plane. There is so much done already......"UNLESS" you have an issue like I did.

I took my time and cut the canopy oh so nice to fit in the hatch...Nicest one I had done on the comps..I stuck some masking tape in various places on the canopy so I could pull it up into place and tack with some light CA....So I slowly made my way around the hatch being ever so careful to just give a drop of CA here and there to hold the canopy in place untill it could be removed and permantly glued in place with some epoxy on the inside....Got all done and WOW what a great job I did....So I walked away for awhile to make sure the CA set before I removed the hatch from the plane.

Went back in and removed it from the plane and WOW again..Very nice Jack..So I mixed some epoxy and did up the sides and back of the canopy and then left it for a bit again to let the epoxy set....Soooo back at it again and WOW turned out great...just got to mix up a bit more and do the front of the canopy and I'll be done this headache....So while I'm waiting for the epoxy to set again I thought well it's safe to pull the masking tape off the canopy now, no chance of the canopy moving....All was going well till very last piece of masking tape and then wholly !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Somehow some CA got under that piece of masking...an area 1"x2" had CA on the exterior of the canopy..Well again....now what to do?? From past experience I knew CA remover was the "wrong" thing to do...So the first thing I did was get soem Q-Tips and the CA remover wrong again this time, now the the affected area is 2 1/2x4"....Oh boy now what...ahh get some razor blades and I'll gently shave the CA off..Wrong again..now it's 3"x 5 1/2"....now what?...I know, get the dremel with the flexible paper sanding disk and ever so carefully I'll sand off the affected area...wrong again....Well now I know for sure what to do, get the buffing wheels for the dremel. Wrong again.....So now what...Throw everything in a heap in the corner and leave it for a few days.

So after quite some time went by (days maybe weeks)I did a search to see if anyone else had grief like me...Sure enough I found a thread. They were saying to use numerous different kinds of metal and plastic scratch removers and buff er up with the polish after...I knew that wouldn't cut it on my situation....So i read further into the thread when fella said the best way was to sand the whole canopy with 1000 and 1500 grit sandpaper and then spray with clear cote.....Well this seemed the most logical, so off the C-Tire and gathered up all the goodies I'd need.

So the worst area I spent quite a bit of time with some 180-600 grit to get my huge mistakes out. While it didn't get rid of all the gouging I had done I sanded most of it out....I then sanded the entire canopy with 1000 and 1500 grit till it was all dull....Cleaned it up well with alcohol and started spraying with clear coat.....I must say that this is an extremely good fix.

I will do this to any of my canopies that have bad scratches in them because, not only will they be extremely clear the clear coat provides a durable finish over the plastic....I really wish now I would have taken before and after photos..Like a small miracle for me.

Sorry for the long story..

Hi Mike, glad you enjoyed it. It is hilarious. It's unbelievable how one man can do so many of the wrong things that he knows won't work...desperate!!

It would work on the inside as well Mike..It really is the answer and very quick and simple to do.

Jack
