Here is the start of the Firewall.

I had a nice piece of multi Layer Birch, 3/4 thick. This will make the main firewall.
Brian was told that these kits quite often build tail heavy. I can beleive it.
There isn't a lot of nose that sticks out past the leading edge of the wing.

So using the 3/4 Birch isn't a concern, That and I needed a good solid piece to hang that big Moki 250 on

I made up a little home made compass to draw a nice round circle. And cut the piece out

Re: 1:3.74 Harvard !!! Build by 3B

The cowl isn't perfectly 90 degrees like the cut in the wood is.

So I set up the disc sander table to have a slight angle that would match the cowl.
I then sanded an angle all the way around the firewall edge. Its hard to see in the photo, but it does angle inwards at the top.

Next is the cowl fitted over the firewall edge..... Perfect

Being that the firewall is a solid piece I will have to cutt some notches along the sides for air to flow through the cowl.

That will become more understandable a bit later when I bolt it to the front of the fuselage. The cowl and firewall are round, but fuselage is oval.
So the cowl around the sides sits away from the fuselage and allows air to flow through.

Re: 1:3.74 Harvard !!! Build by 3B

Next up is dry fitting the Moki to the firewall.
I cut a hole that matches the mounting ring of the Moki. I then had to carve a recess in the back of the firewall for the throttle arm to have room to move.

As you can see, the carburator is completely behind the firewall. Because of the small diameter of the moki mounting ring. The carburator will have to be removed when ever the engine is removed from the firewall. If not..... then I would have to cut large areas out around the hole making for a weak area that may be prone to twisting.

I might be telling Grannie how to suck eggs, but have you identified the composition of the fuselage yet? Epoxy resin or polyester resin, to establish the gluing process for attaching the wood to the fuse? Tex.

Not 100% sure. It look almost the same as what Carden uses for their cowls.
It has a greenish tint to it.
It could be fiberglass, but it could be polyester.

The white on the outside that makes everything nice and smooth and has all the panel lines is some sort of gell coat.

It also has on the inside, very thin styrofoam laminated between 2 of the layers of glass cloth. This helps the fuselage hold its shape.

I will probably be using a polyurethane based glue to hold the stringers along th walls. It will also expand to fill the little crevices in the glass cloth.
