Does Adding a Directional Antenna to my RX help increase my range?
Hi there, I am running a low power VTX FPV system on my airplane and I am quite disappointed with my range of 428 ft.
I am using a RH Polarized antenna on my TX and a Dipole antenna on my RX. I was thinking about upgrading the antennas on my RX to have 1 RH clover antenna and a RH patch antenna. My question is that will putting a patch antenna on the RECIEVER side even help with my range? Thanks Ardalan |

Re: Does Adding a Directional Antenna to my RX help increase my range?
1) What frequency are you using
2) What is the power of the VTX? With these details it would be easier to give you some useful advice for your antennas and range. But a bigger question would be why are you using a polarized antenna VTX and Dipole antenna on the base? That is a solid NO-NO!!! Why aren't you using a RCHP antenna on the groundstation to match the VTX??? True, you will get better range on an RH patch. But it is directional. Will you be using an antenna tracker? I would first try an RHCP cloverleaf on the VRX first.

Re: Does Adding a Directional Antenna to my RX help increase my range?
Hi there, I have been using a dipole on the RX side because that's really just what it came with and I did but a RHCP antenna (Cloverleaf), however, when it came, I realized that I had ordered the wrong connection style.
I'm running 5.8GHZ at 10 or 25 mW. Not Sure My RX has diversity so I was thinking about putting a Helical and a RH Clover on the other. Thanks, Ardy |

Re: Does Adding a Directional Antenna to my RX help increase my range?
I have a set of IBCrazy's Duraspec antennas, cloverleaf I think, on both vtx and vrx.(got from Rotorquest). With a 200mw 5.8vtx, I may have gone about 1.75km and lost radio before video. It wont power well through a small stand of trees near our field (at low altitude) though.
A bit big for a smaller plane though, but I think a good antenna makes all the difference, and a good one likely wont be as cheap as a cheapy one. I couldnt go 1/3rd the distance with the exact same set-up with the stock antennas this stuff came with. |

Its great that you have diversity. If you are going with a RHCP on one of your RX's that is great. Helicals are awesome for range but they have a very narrow field. you will be having to either make sure you fly within its angle of sensitivity or you will have to keep pointing the antenna at your FPV ship. That is why many people use antenna trackers when they are using narrow beam directional antennas.

Yes the patch antennas have an increased gain in one direction.
Google patch antennas for the actual science behind it. |
