Re: S-Bus and JR !!!!!!!!!! Oh Baby !!!!!!

WOW... I just read over the posts and scanned the 82-page Robbe manual... very, very impressive!

For those that do want to outlay $$ on a new Radio, this is a great way to experience S-Bus!!

I've been playing a bit with Wingburner's SBUS system / 12Z and it's simply amazing!!

And everything they're saying about the SBUS servos feeling more powerful and centered over the Hitec 7950s is true... what a difference and super smooth!!

Futaba has got it going on !!!!

Yep... Even though mutiple servos are run off of a single 3 wire leed. The power portion of the leeds is a mighty 17ga. More than enough to carry any power demands we can conjure up with a 43% plane

When I did my power-system testing last year, I had a common red/black 22AWG servo lead going back to the tail of my 42% that supplied power to 3 rudder and 2 elevator servos. I then had single strand servo wires (so 5 yellows) from the proper port in the Rx feeding signals to each of the 5 servos (so 7 strands of wire in a cluster going to the tail instead of the normal 5x3 = 15 servo wire strands)....

What I found using my EagleTree data logger, is that normal operating current on the 5 tail servos is quite low (around 2Amps) and if I did hard manoeuvres like snaps, walls or lomcevaks, the current would spike to around 8-10Amps, but for way less than a second! Since that day, I now run standard Rx's with servo leads in from my batteries and homemade servo wire harnesses (with common red/black) out to feed to my servos and I sold all those heavy, expensive Power Distribution Systems!!

I think Futaba saw this also, and realized that we go overkill on our normal systems!!.. Hence why a 17AWG wire will easily power 8 or even 16 servos without a problem.

(I notice that some folks on other forums are already trying to bash Futaba for using a single 17AWG wire for power... those folks just need to test it and find out the real truth, LOL!!)

Basically Futaba just called all the Power Distribution Companies on this myth and that takes gutts to do, but I give Futaba major credit for it!!!

I give a HUGE to Futaba!!!!!

Re: S-Bus and JR !!!!!!!!!! Oh Baby !!!!!!

Its like our choice in servos the last couple of years. ( actually forever )
We always lean towards the strongest, fastest, latest and greatest.

A few years ago, the same planes we fly today. Were flown with a lot less servo. They flew just fine. Putting in a stronger faster servo, did it make big difference ?
Do we need all the torque todays servos can make, I don't think so.
How fast does the servo need to be ? We just add more expo to slow them down anyway.
Ok, now lets up the voltage and make them stronger and faster again. The only benefit from that is being able to use larger capacity batteries and eliminateing a point of failure ( regulator ).
But again, how much capacity do we need ?

Re: S-Bus and JR !!!!!!!!!! Oh Baby !!!!!!

17GA? That's an odd size. Typically wire is manufactured in even guage sizes like 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20..... obviously Futaba is gettin g custom cable made.

So Trev have you posted any pics of the S-Bus stuff, i.e. the power cable or of your setup with the 7 wires?

Back in the 80's I experimented with fibre optic servo leads. Same idea run 18ga shielded 2-pair out to the servos for power then a single strand of fibre between Rx and each servo. Worked quite well. Ted Barette is doing something like your trick Trev except he is runing 3 conductor 22ga shielded cable from the Rx to each servo. He is grounding the end closest to the Rx. He's been doing it since his Pattern Days with great interferance free operation.
