Cedar shaft leading edge

Ok on my extra 300 wings there is a cedar arrow shaft leading edge. The balsa sheeting is suppose to come up and meet it flush, after some sanding. So my problem is that I can't get the glue to hold the balsa to the cedar. It just will not stick. Secondly I didn't sand the ribs flush to the cedar shaft before I sheeted them so where the ribs meet the sheeting and the cedar leading edge I am getting a gap . I hope this makes sense to you guys I'll try to get a picture of what I am talking about tonight.

Thanks for the help

What glue?

CA does get useless with age. Try some new/fresh product.

cedar has oil in it ,very hard to glue, polyurathane or epoxy is best.If possible replace it as it is very brittle

Using a cedar dowel seems kind of strange. Most dowel that we use for modeling is maple.

The only thing I can think of to do is to create a sub leading edge out of balsa which the dowel glues to and the sheeting goes over and glues onto. This subedge would have to go inbetween each rib. Then the leading edge is sanded to shape.

As was mentioned earlier I would replace the cedar with maple.

Cedar dowel

I am pretty sure it is cedar, it came in a House of Balsa kit. I bought some gel super glue at Walmart that I thought would work better but it still didn't stick! It would be kinda hard to replace the dowel at this point but I will have to figure something out.

I don't know if it applies to cedar, but some wood is slightly acidic. CA is slightly acidic too and sets when it is nuetralized. Some plywood (spruce?), for example, doesn't work well with CA for that reason. One thing to try is to rub some baking soda into the the wood. That will cause the CA to activate (quickly!) when applied. Personally, I'd use plain old carpenters glue.

The most common dowel out there is birch.

I would use the standard yellow wood glue.

It should work well.

Just test a bit on some of the dowel where it won't be seen or on an extra piece if you have it.

The area where you put the other glue may cause a problem.

Good luck
