fiberglassing foam

Ok, I have never worked with fiberglass before and have what may be a dumb question!

I am wanting to fiberglass a part on my SPAD, which is made up of a blue foam former and the coroplast. I had vinyl tape there before and it did not hold well.
Is there a type of fiberglass resin that will not eat the blue foam away? I thought there must be some sort of epoxy based resin? Or can i just use some 30 min epoxy? ( maybe thinned with something?)
Is there a certain weight of cloth that is common use? Or could i just use some of the wife's old panty hose?!! After all it is a SPAD!!

Re: fiberglassing foam

Epoxy resin.
I'm sure it wil be fine, but it never hurts to test it.
Just mix a small batch and apply to a piece of scrap foam.

Re: fiberglassing foam

Hi,

Yeah you can use Z-poxy finishing resin, West systems and Aeropoxy resins on any type of foam. Make sure you do proper mixing with recommended mixing ratios as some epoxies mix 50/50 and others differently!.

Since its spad you are working on, i'd say use very light weight of fiberglass cloth and Z-Poxy should be good enough for your application needs.

Click on my signature to see how i glassed foam structure of my S Connie with Aeropoxy resin.

Cheers,
Sammy

Re: fiberglassing foam

There are many different brands such as Smith Craft epoxy resin which is also excellent stuff. If it ends "poxy" it will be fine for your SPAD.

Just avoid Polyester resins or any producut whose brand name ends with "ester". These eat foam.

Re: fiberglassing foam

I used 1/2 ounce fiberglass and some 30 minute epoxy thinned with alcohol on my combat plane. ( foam body, coro wing ) . I know that epoxy shouldn't really be thinned, but it worked fine.
Added about 2 ounces to the weight of the plane when finished.
I pretty well covered all of the fuse after it snapped in half on the first bad landing. I had tried Gorilla tape, but it just wasn't strong enough.
