When I had it assembled on the bench I tested just that. If the source voltage drops off that much you end up with it dipping to about 4.5 V.
I looked into using different types of regulators but many of them require minimum loads to regulate and many more circuit elements to operate. They also increase in price dramatically.

Sounds like a lot of effort. Why not just use a receiver battery?
