Thanks Jeff!
It is one of those planes that has made us appreciate foam models.
Although it has been out of production for years, it will be produced again for Jepe.

Re: Hobby Topgun 90mm L-39 in DDR markings ready for flight!

Tried to fly ours after sitting for a while and one of the HK servoless retracts would retract but then would refuse to extend. Flight was cancelled. After sitting a couple days retracted the gear worked flawlessly when I tested it today (thinking I was going to replace it). I think the microswitch was depressed in the extended position for so long in storage it stuck but then fixed itself with the gear in a different position.
Next we decided to add a couple strong LED landing lights into the tip tanks. The bulbs used are 6V lantern LED replacements bough on ebay. It was simple to pop the lens covers off the tips and add the new bulbs. The power comes directly from the landing gear wiring as it was most convenient to splice into. I could have used the aileron servos but the wiring wasn't as easy to get at without damaging the wing surface.
While things were on the table I noticed my original EMAX 3660 1650kv powered CS9012 had some light vibration so I swapped in another CS9012 powered by a FlyFly 1500kv outrunner. The outrunner fan with motor only weighs 319g VS the EMAX inrunner at 435g.. The FlyFly motor will likely be slightly less powerful but the lighter weight might just offset any performance loss. We will fly it and see as soon as the weather allows. Unfortunately the original RedBrick 125amp ESC makes the FlyFly outrunner run rough so I had to swap ESC's to a HK SS series 190-200 which runs smooth with outrunners.

Re: Hobby Topgun 90mm L-39 in DDR markings ready for flight!

I have made several flights since installing the FW 90mm 12 blade rotor with FlyFly 1500kv outrunner and find it an ideal setup in our L39. Peak wattmeter readings in the plane were 88amps/2065watts settling to 86/1950. Later in the run 84/1850. Using the plastic FW 90mm shroud helped keep the total fan/motor weight very light at 319g. The fan is all whoosh with practically no mechanical noise making it very quiet.

Hey there Eric, was surfing the net this morning and came across a really nice paint scheme for the L-39. The civilian aerobatic team is from Latvia and they call themselves, The Baltic Beee's

Might consider it if you ever want to freshen up your bird with a new look. There are lots of great pictures on the net for reference which is nice.

No. No more production. Jepe emailed me that he will not be selling any HTG L39's.

Re: Hobby Topgun 90mm L-39 in DDR markings ready for flight!

The HK medium sized retract was acting intermittently until I added some light oil to the drive gear and loosened all the retract case screws. When the case haves are tight it seems to cause binding. With dozens of similar style retracts, this is the first that has that issue. Since it is out of the plane I will post a picture of our “pull pull” steering arrangement. Simple balsa rails glued to the retract to hold the servo.

Re: Hobby Topgun 90mm L-39 in DDR markings ready for flight!

Made a video of our L39 today powered by the FW 90mm 12 blade and a FlyFly 1500kv outrunner. Battery a GensAce 6S 5500mah
Great sound and power from the cheapest components. Decent flight time as well with final cell voltages 3.7 or better.
