question about carb extension?

Hi All,
I was wondering if anyone has thought of or done a carb manifold extension for a glow 2 stoke engine.
Here is my thought, To have a inverted glow engine and make a 90 degree elbow to set the carb to the side. would it work? it would be like a 4 stroke carb manifold . I'm thinking this ,to see if that would help to avoid some of the the inverted glow engines problems . Would it run the same ,or would the extra distance with a 90 degree make it not run at all. I would like to here your thoughts.

Thanks
Joe

Re: question about carb extension?

I have made some carb adapters so I could mount a different style carb on the engine. A good 90 deg. adaptor would be hard to make and would probably cause a power loss and a fussy engine. The big problem with inverted engines is both the piston and glow plug retain oil, making the engine hard to start. Back when we use to fly without mufflers I use to close the exhaust port then prime the exhaust, wait 20 seconds then start the engine. It worked great. Both my weed waker and my chainsaw have to be stored with the exhaust port down other wise they will fill up with oil and be impossible to start.

Run the engine dry after each use. store nose down with intake open and the head up. To clean out an engine, remove the glow plug and wash it out with a little fuel. Stand the aircraft so the exhaust port is down. Turn it over with the starter a couple of dozen times. If the engine has not been run in a while, give the intake a real good prime and spin it again. Replace the plug and try it, it might start right away, if it does not choke or prime the intake as per normal. ALWAYS GIVE IT A COUPLE OF HAND FLIPS BEFORE USING THE STARTER.

Re: question about carb extension?

Shouldn't be a problem, as long as it is sealed (no air leaks).. I have made them in the past for 4 strokes, and didn't have any issues.. As for power loss, you may have some on your top end. But your low end might be a bit better.. Hard to say for sure, but as I have found most aircraft are over powered anyways.

Re: question about carb extension?

Thanks for the thoughts guy's, I think ,I'm going to take a stab at it. I have a small hobby lathe with a 4 jaw chuck and a small milling machine. I haven't play with either to much so this can get me some time on them. I want to try it with my super tiger .90, which runs like a top.
A fella in a local club told me he mounts his 4 stroke's at a 6:30 position to help keep the fuel from sitting in the glow plug ,he's never had a dead stick on either engine of his twin,so there might be something to it .(no on board glow either) .

I guess I'll find out one way or another . I want it for my mustang/corsair hybrid ( corstang)I plan on putting together. Got the fuse and wing just need the time.

Thanks
Joe
