Gluing plywood formers to f/glass fuz

I am building a warbird, and needed to glue the plywood formers to the f/glass fuz.

Apart from using epoxy, is there any other glue that you guys used with success?

Thank you in advance for all the insights.

Alex

Is the fuselage made from polyester resin or epoxy resin?

Are you gluing in just formers or the firewall as well? If the firewall is it flush with the front end or does it have to be aligned with the nose ring?

It is

A 1/4 scale warbird, and the firewall is 3/4 inches think, to go into the "well" instead of the ring. It has to withstand the vibration of a Zenoah G62.

The rest are 1/8 aircraft ply formers, to be glued to the different section of the fuz.

Thx,

Alex

Alex,
Not sure if Ed is doing something different but my method for firewalls is scuff the area for gluing with sand paper. Have a good fit with the firewall to the fuse. Then I mix short cuttings of glass cloth (scraps) with epoxy. Then I tamp the mix around the edges working all the way around. I do it from the inside and use a piece of wood about 3/8 x 1/4". when done there should be a fillet gluing the fuse and firewall together. I then go to the front and you should have some that came through from tamping. I smooth that out and apply a bit more to make a small bead on the inside front. Make sure it is still aligned and let harden. Slow cure epoxy is the best as you need the time. I have done lots this way and have never had one come out. Mind you I have destroyed some but the firewalls are usually sticking to the sides.
For the formers you could do the same but not use as much epoxy as there is not that much stress compared to the front end.
Hope this is some help.
John

Would polyurethane do the job?

Great question. Good to see a "constructive" thread.

Ted,
I would not bet on the polyeurathane as from what I see it gets brittle. Epoxy although hard will flex a bit which you need with the epoxy fuse.

Do not even think of using polyurethane. For the formers do as John advised. The reason I asked about the firewall and nose ring is because the nose ring is the only reference there is to get the firewall in square. Assuming of course the nose ring is accurately molded.

scroll to "Building" then
"Firewall Installation"

There is a full description with pictures of firewall installation. The airplane is different but the procedure is the same. Read the whole article.

I wrote the article so if there are questions I will attempt to answer them.
