We just arrived home safe and sound and many thanks again to all of the people (especially Mike and Ralph) for hosting and running the 2010 Canadian Nationals.

It was a fantastic event (despite a few setbacks) that we will all remember for a long time.

I hope everyone had a safe trip home and hope to see you all again soon at either the NOIC or some future event.

Brendan

Re: Canadian Nationals Thank You.

Ditto from me. We had a great time in Stoney Creek and Mike, Ralph and everyone invloved did a fantastic job. I really feel for all who lost their planes but we soldier on. I know personally how much work it is to run a Nationals so congrats.
I want to let everyone know that Quebec will be hosting the 2011 Nats....place and date to be determined. Isn't this fun?

Holy crap!!

Were they all from mid-airs? Or was it radio problems?

What the heck happened?

Re: Canadian Nationals Thank You.

In our case it was sheered propeller bolts.... the prop became a flying saw that cut the fuselage in two in the air

But to keep this thread on the bright side of things... thank you SO MUCH to our gracious hosts, all volunteers, our CDs for all the organization, and to our fellow pilots for rallying to keep us flying despite our setback! You are incomparable friends.

Re: Canadian Nationals Thank You.

Very regretably my plane tried to occupy the same airspace as Sam's Yak. I know in my case, my caller was doing an excellent job of trying to track Sam's plane and was giving me that guidance all through the sequence. My caller and I were both devastated that the planes collided.

In our situation, I was flying horizontal and Sam was coming down vertical from a humpty (I believe). We were not crossing back and forth in this case. All that said it is sometimes very difficult in a 3 dimensional air space to make that split second decision to avoid or bail out and also which direction to go when you do avoid (right, left, up or down). It happens so darn fast. I dare say there are probably arm chair flyers saying we should have done this or that but in the heat of the moment, in a 3 dimensional space we suffered a tragic outcome.

Even the next day when directions were given for the Advanced and Unlimited classes to try and fly out and the Basic and Sportsman guys to fly in, I saw 3-4 fairly near misses. I know I am giving this problem some serious thought as to what we can do to minimize these problems.

I want to publicy thank Sam for being as gracious and philosophical as he was over the terrible loss of his plane. I certainly wish there had been a different outcome.
