Gasoline four stroke engines
Besides the Saito are there any smaller gasoline powered four stroke engines?
Thanks Peter

Honda GX25, GX31, GX36. Not specific to planes though.

Re: Gasoline four stroke engines
The fuji has a wet sump so there is no mixing of oil in the fuel, super efficient too and sound cool....probably not too good for extended inverted flight though

Re: Gasoline four stroke engines
This may be a stupid question but would mounting the Fuji engines present a problem? Most single cylinder gas engines are mounted inverted, however, would mounting inverted potentially cause an oil starvation issue? There must by some kind of provision made for this but how would that work in this case?
Also, these engines are heavy by today's standards. The 25cc is 4 pounds and the 34cc is almost 5 pounds. |

Re: Gasoline four stroke engines
This motor has to mounted upright as I believe the oil fed to the major organs are much similar to a small engine found on a lawnmower splash fed by the crank webs?? however having never seen one apart I could not be sure, I read an article on this motor and indeed it stressed the motor had to be mounted upright, as for the weight well I guess it would not be mounted in a sport plane so would not be a major concern??

Re: Gasoline four stroke engines
Check out these beauties from Moki.....they are spark ignition too!! Siedel also make some radial four-strokes on gas and spark.

Re: Gasoline four stroke engines
Having run and flown the 25cc Fuji four cycle engine - I can say that the engine MUST be upright mounted. The wet sump does have a check valve system which keeps the oil in the engine when going inverted (like in maneuvers or some inverted flying) however it is suggested to keep inverted flying to 30 second maximum limits.
The Fuji is neat, very quiet and very clean obviously, and has a certain "neat" factor. It would be well suited to a lightly loaded plane like a Cub. It is not a powerhouse (although I did test fly it off skiis in a 20 lb airframe) and is no where in the same class as the Saito 36cc gasoline engine. As far as I am aware, the Saito is the only "modern style", lightweight gasoline engine, with the next being that RCS 50cc which is quite a bit larger. Of course we are talking factory made, commonly available engines. Many one-of's have been made but are not for sale. AJC
