Here's a Canadian organization that has had this technology airborne since 1999. I have flown their 4 rotor version and it flies pretty much like a fixed-wing ac. There is little tendency for it to slide off hover because of the electronic stabilization. Visual orientation is by visual reference to large onboard fore-aft markers.

That is one of the coolest things I have ever seen! Amazing for taking aerial footage of just about anything, including other planes!

It also sounds like a bunch of angry bees.
