Which expanding Foam for Proboat?

Remove this ad - become a site supporter!
Hey All,

just getting into boats, getting a Miss bud Copy (Fiberglass hull) ready to go with a brushless motor and such, have heard people injecting foam in to the Sponsons (spelling?) in case it flips..

Anyone have any tips or hints for this? What foam are people using? do you inject it thru all the open spaces?

Thanks
D8

Great Stuff, low expansion from Home Depot.

Use only a tennis ball size amount at a time, let it expand over night, and repeat until the cavity is full. This way you will avoid overfilling the cavity and overexpansion. I have used this in all my boats and it provides extra strenght as well as flotation.

DASH,

I'm not sure if you've gone ahead and used the expanding foam but there's a better way to do it. Most of us use pool noodles. You can cut them and stuff them into your boat and when they become dirty or wet you can take them out.

Expanding foam is permanent and a product I'd avoid, if it happens to expand to much you could split a seem.

Thanks everyone! I'm just about ready to go ahead with it, will try the Pool noodle thing first, simply for being able to remove it and easier to work with, but the window and door stuff sounds good too!

Talking Re: Which expanding Foam for Proboat?

Hello Dash8 : Using expanding foam is a NO NO. It will eventually absorb water and make the hull heavier. Stick with the pool noodles. Been in this hobby for 18 years and have seen many boats ruined by using that crap. You can also use pipe - gray black insulation, used on copper water lines and comes in 4 - 6 foot lengths. Very good for tighter and smaller spaces. Can be purchased at Can tire , home depot, lowes, home hardware, It is a smaller version of the pool noodle, it is also closed cell foam and will not absorb water and will not be affected by , nitro , gasoline , or water. The only stuff that will stick to it if you need to keep a pile of them together is shoo goo or the marine goo which can be found at home depot.

Re: Which expanding Foam for Proboat?

Pool noodles or pipe insulation are definitely the way to go! You can almost get an entire pool noodle in most 7.5cc sized boats and bigger, which is enough flotation to support over 100lbs.

Re: Which expanding Foam for Proboat?

Expanding foam does NOT absorb water, period.
Anyone who has had problems with over expansion are using too much at once,,,,,no other excuses.

Pool noodels are great but provide no extra strength that people want in some cases.

I have been using this for 25 years and still have some of the original boats I used it in. Not one issue.

I have however seen boats crash and sink after being run over by other boats, that were using pool noodles that were not properly secured....the noodles made it back to shore for future use..........................

To each their own.

Re: Which expanding Foam for Proboat?

Expanding foam for me. Gets into all the small places noodles can't, provides much more hull strength, does not absorb water (would suck if your doors or windows retained water), and can also secure batteries and other equipment to the hull if your in a pinch.

My 2 cents
