Had some time to start working on the fuselage this week. The pictures show how the basic structure is assemble before you add the formers to give the final shape of the fuselage.

Re: Sig Citabria (Build Log)

Installed more cross-braces.

Although the instructions are really good with lots of pictures and very detailed instructions, I was able to goof up...Oups!

First, the window frame is build of two layer of balsa and I started with the wrong layer. Easy fix but than I realized that I installed the first plywood former of the firewall upside down. Fortunately, I was able to remove the former with a sharp blade without damage to the structure and reinstall it correctly.

Re: Sig Citabria (Build Log)

More work on the fuselage...

I installed the stringer on top of the tail, and started to build the horizontal stabilizer platform. You must be very careful to make it parallel with the top of the fuselage sides. I know because I had to re-do it after reading the instructions...

Another thing I did too fast is installing the former just in front of the cabin braces incorrectly...after some cutting and re-gluing, it's exactly as per plans.

Bottom line, once you are done reading the instruction and studying the plans, read again and double check the plans. That would have save me a lot of time. Another thing I noticed is that the instructions mention to ensure the balsa side are exactly as per plan (and guess what, I "kinda" did it as it looked close enough...) well, it appears now that the sides where a little more than 1/16" too high. As it is somewhat too late to correct and it won't affect really the final shape of the fuselage, it will stay like it is now.

Re: Sig Citabria (Build Log)

I try to keep moving on this project as I would like to see it flying before the end of the month, will see...

Tonight I completed the installation of the stringers on the bottom of the fuselage. One must be careful as the front part is installed separately to permit sheeting of that part.

Re: Sig Citabria (Build Log)

Next I planked the nose with 3/32 balsa sheeting. I didn't use the provided wood for the top of the nose as I had a 4" wide sheet instead of the 3" and this way I could make the top with only 2 pieces. You got to use water to be able to easily shape the wood without breaking it and since I use carpenter wood, it doesn't affect the glue. It just takes a little longer to dry.

Re: Sig Citabria (Build Log)

This is a great thread - I enjoy watching a build in progress. I swear if I ever have the time I'm going to start building, and this Citabria looks like a beauty! Keep the posts coming!

Re: Sig Citabria (Build Log)

I have completed the cabin frame and installed the braces. I used some cardboard templates to ensure the sides stay straight. It's slowly starting to look like a Citabria...
