Top Flite Corsair 60 Build

Thanks to Mr. Bob Byrnes, here is my new build project!

I'm sure I'll have a lot of questions as fiber glass and retracts are a new thing to me :P I will also try using carpenter's glue for most of this build (also a first for me).

First off...any recommendations for engines? I was think going right to a 1.2 4-stroke. Most likely an ASP 1.2 from Hobby City or a Saito, if I can find one at a good price.

Re: Top Flite Corsair 60 Build

Great choice.

The hardest part I found was getting the main wing spar section straight.

Im just about to the glassing stage of mine..so I too could use the tips..

Curious as to why you would fiberglass the plane. Would this not add a lot of wieght to it.

Re: Top Flite Corsair 60 Build

Nice choice, I have one that I have been working on awhile. When you put your retracts in make sure you slide them back so the knuckle of the retracts does not push through the opposite side and also look for narrow wheels to fit in the wing. Also I am using the West System epoxy resin for fiberglassing, you can get a pump that gets rid of your mixing worries. Fiberglass if done properly does not add that much weight at all, I have not seen any big weight gain and easy to apply.

Will post some pics later.

Keep those Darksuckers empty, so it easier to see.

Re: Top Flite Corsair 60 Build

I picked up 5 sq yards of 3/4 oz glass cloth, and its lighter than silk.

The first problem I found is that my hands are so rough I cant handle the stuff without them surgical gloves or it gets hooked on my hands and pulls fibers out of the weave.

Re: Top Flite Corsair 60 Build

Glassing a plane gives you added strength and the plane can now be easily painted and even detailed. If you dont Glass it, your only other option is to cover it with Utra/monocoate, and after all your hard earned work, you will end up with a plane that looks like a H9 ARF(no offence to H9 ARFs) but everyone already has one.

Tommy! I would choose an OS91 2s or a DL30 Gasser for that plane. I had a couple of ASPs before and they can be finicky. Others have said they liked them, but I found they didnt diliver the power. You can get the DL30 at HobbyKing for $220 I believe. And the beuty of gas is.. it doesnt leave oil all over the plane and is much cheaper to refill than nitro. I have an SPE26cc gasser on my 75" Corsair. Flys great!

Get a box of the rubber gloves they use in the hospital Marco. You really shouldnt get any resin on your hands becouse that stuff is an accumlative poisen.

I would think a DL30 would be to big, I have a SPE26 for my 60 size Corsair. Do you have any pics of the engine in the cowl?

Re: Top Flite Corsair 60 Build

Here's a pic of me holding my DL30 next to the plane. They look almost Identical. dont know about the waight, but I emagine there pretty close. I bought this plane used and set up like you see it. The luver is to protect the spark plug in a nose over. Not my design

Re: Top Flite Corsair 60 Build

Marco: where did you get your glass and resin and how much did you pay?

Vettstr: Thanks for the info...for some reason I just assumed gas was just too big for em. I noticed HK is sold out of the 30cc DLs...might go with a 26cc Turnigy http://hobbycity.com/hobbyking/store...idProduct=9969
