Sunparlor Heavy Lift Contest 2010

The objective is to build/design an aircraft that can lift as much weight as possible using a stock OS .61 FX engine.

M.A.A.C. Safety Code in effect at all times as well as any club rules including no fly zones.

Design Criteria
1. No lighter-than-air or rotary wing aircraft
2. Use of a single factory stock OS .61FX engine and stock factory exhaust.
3. Payload must be carried inside the aircraft in a cargo bay or bays.
4. Payload must be one or more homogeneous mass when mounted and fixed inside the aircraft. No weights hanging on the outside of the airframe.
5. Gross weight must not exceed 55 lbs.

Team Requirements
None, only the pilots must be members of MAAC or the AMA to fly.

Registration Fees
The entry fee is $50 per registered aircraft. A single team may have more than one entry but each entry will pay a $50 entry fee. Limit 30 teams first come basis so register early avoid missing out

It is the intent of the organizers to return all entry fees as trophies and prizes at the event. We are hoping to be able to obtain additional prizes through any sponsors.

Aircraft Systems Requirements
Radio equipment must meet present MAAC/AMA standards.
1. Receiver batteries have a minimum 500 mAh capacity recommended 700 mAh or greater.
2. All aircraft must use a spinner or rounded safety nut.
3. All control surfaces, hardware, linkages and servos to be sized for heavy duty use. All aircraft will be inspected for airworthiness.
4. Radios must meet current M.A.A.C. standards 2.4 GHz highly recommended.

Competition Supplied Fuel
Fuel supplied by the organizers will be 10% nitro most likely Cool Power.

1. The air boss must be obeyed at all times. The air boss has final say as to the safety of any aircraft and has the authority to ground or disqualify any aircraft. Failure to follow the air bosses instructions are grounds for disqualification from the event.
2. Aircraft must be identified with the team name and the pilots MAAC or AMA number.
3. You have a timed 5 minutes to accomplish a successful takeoff. Multiple attempts allowed within the 5 minute window.
4. Use of a helper to restrain the model while the engine is revved up prior to release is allowed but the helper may not push the model upon release.
5. No aerobatic maneuvers of any kind allowed
6. The aircraft must remain intact in its configuration through takeoff, flight and landing. No parts of any kind may depart the aircraft during this time.
7. In the event of a hard landing where the aircraft has sustained damage if the aircraft can be lifted with all parts remaining attached it will be considered a successful flight.
8. Broken propellers are allowed and will not invalidate a flight attempt.
9. A successful flight consists of a takeoff, one circuit and a successful landing. The aircraft must fly past both ends of the runway to qualify as a successful circuit.
10. Multiple circuits are allowed but touch and goes are not.
11. The first and second flights are unique in that the first flight is an empty payload bonus flight. The second flight is the first flight with a payload. The order of the teams for these two rounds will be determined by a single draw. All other rounds will be determined by the team with the heaviest weight lifted flying last. Least weight first through to the heaviest.

1. Upon completion of an Empty Payload Bonus flight your raw payload weight for your heaviest lift will be multiplied by a factor of 1.025.
2. Raw weight score: Weight lifted in lbs.
3. Flight score = Raw weight score + Empty payload bonus.

Re: Sunparlor Heavy Lift 2010

Wow that looks like a very interesting event.

I looked through last years pictures and found some of the desgins quite interesting.

Most surprising was the winner, who had a very conventional looking airplane with conventional material.

Good luck in this year's event!

Good luck with your event, Dennis. I'll probably come out to watch, but I'm having too much fun with my bundle of foam to do much else.

Re: Sunparlor Heavy Lift 2010

Update so far we have $250 towards prize money. Remember registration is only $50 per entry and that too goes into the pot to be divided among the winners.

Re: Sunparlor Heavy Lift 2010

Remember being in Dayton Ohio a few years ago when they had a big competition like this at Wright Patterson Airforce Base (or the air museum) not sure where what ended or started. It was really interesting. Good luck with yours this year
