Canadian Spitfire

I'm going to put together a Spitfire, and became interested in the RCAF Spitfires. I am wondering what markings would have made them identifiable as Canadian. Any thoughts?

Re: Canadian Spitfire
Dean2287, this IS the place toask the question.
If you want the most recognizable colour scheme that's Canadian -- do a Google on "Johnnie Johnson Spitfire". He's definitely the greatest Canadian pilot in the Battle of Britain through to D-Day. 25-plus confirmed kills from 1943 thorugh 1945. http://www.spitfiresite.com/referenc...-revisited.htm Last edited by byrocat; 04-20-2010 at 07:19 PM. |

If you can get a hold of the two books, "Spitfire the Canadians" 1 & 2, that would give you a lot of options. http://www.amazon.ca/Spitfire-Canadi.../dp/1550461486
Since I live in Winnipeg, I will do my next Spitfire in RCAF 402 "City of Winnipeg Squadron" http://spitfire9.com/kkspitfirebuild.htm I like finding info on the pilot especially Canadians that paid the ultimate price like my Dynaflite Spitfire at http://www.upaero.com/georgecorbett.html My now gone Platt Spitfire was in this markings http://www.upaero.com/iankeltie.html good luck! .

Re: Canadian Spitfire
I bought a Kyosho Spitfire 50 here on rccanada, and to my suprise it comes with Canadian markings. In fact, it looks exactly like the one in cf100's picture, but with different call numbers. I would like to add some scale detailing and some additional markings if possible.

Re: Canadian Spitfire
...I'm starting to answer my own questions. Of course, Canada was a commonwealth back then, so the roundels were the same as the British roundels. The only uniquely Canadian markings would be the small round Canada flag placed beside and beneath the canopy, or the specific call numbers. I understand that certain bases in Canada would also add their own identifiers, such as Winnipeg.
Any advice or suggestions would be welcome. I'm not a scale builder by any means...I just like dressing them up a little. |

You profile indicates that you live in Calgary, then RCAF "City of Calgary" 403 Squadron might be a choice, then find a pilot from that squadron.
see http://rcaf.com/Squadrons/squadronDe...03-Squadron-62 http://www.aircrewremembrancesociety...4/hodgson.html use google to search more info RCAF 403 Squadron aircraft Spitfire I (May 1941 - July 1941) Spitfire IIA (July 1941 - September 1941) Spitfire VB (August 1941 - January 1943) Spitfire VC (August 1941 - January 1943) Spitfire IXC (January 1943 - December 1944) Spitfire XVI (December 1944 - July 1945) see http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showthread.php?t=15273 http://episode2.org/2007/11/sqn-ldr-...lf-fw-190.html cheers!

[QUOTE=dean2287;706297]...I'm starting to answer my own questions. Of course, Canada was a commonwealth back then, so the roundels were the same as the British roundels. /QUOTE]
Dean2287 -- you just flunked Canadian Civics 101 -- during WW2, Canada was a Dominion (that's the British North America Act that started the country off in 1867). The current constitution (1982) calls the country a federation. Canada was a part of the British Empire back in the days, which morphed into the British Commonwealth when the Empire ceased to exist after WW2. Sorry, but you caught me in a nit-picking mood. Nothing is meant personally and don't take it that way. I got schooled in the 1950's and 1960's when July 1 was Dominion Day ("The Maple Leaf Forever" got sung a lot), and May 24 was Victoria Day ("TMLF" got sung here too!) plus Augusts in Halfax was Natal Day ("Hearts of Oak" got played a lot). Civics was a required subject in school and I grew up in a number of military bases/cities so goofing a Civics question was not an option -- read public humiliation in front of your friends. |
