Hi all

I realize this part of the form is for Cars/Trucks, but I thought someone here may be able to help me.

I'm using a chainsaw in a theatrical show and am told I need to convirt it to electric from gas. It's also a chance to make it lighter.

The chainsaw I'm using is a Makita DCS230T. The engine is 22.2cc 2-stroke petrol engine delivering 740 watts (1HP).

I don't need that much power as I don't intend to cut anything, I just want the chain to spin a bit.

Can anyone recommend a motor that would be suitable for this application? I know very little about motors, but can handle electricity.

My goal is to have the saw, which is direct drive from the motor, as loght as possible, and have the chain spin a bit. The chain need not have speed or power, just be spinning.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Re: Chainsaws

Take the piston and head off but leave the crank as this will hold the chain etc .. You could weld a sprocket of some kind to the crank and then drive it with a 1/4 scale servo through the hole where the piston was .. just fiddle the servo so that it keeps turning .. ( you could drive the motor directly from a lipo ) if you want noise you could buy the electronics that are used in many war birds to emulate 12 cylinder engines ..

Re: Chainsaws

Why wreck a decent saw???
wouldn't it be a bit easier to find an electric chainsaw?

Re: Chainsaws

Hi all

Thank you for the responses. I'm afraid this saw has to match 2 other gas ones that are in a video, so it has to be a modified saw, not a different one.

On to changing the motor out. Thankyou for the tips. I'm afraid I don't know much about this, but you gave me a great starting point.

Many thanks
