Looks like IAR 80 and I are on the same page now. IAR 80's excellent drawings show nicely how the positive and negative terminals of the 6S combination pack get shorted together when making a mistake in plugging it all together. The short circuit current flows through the wire harnesses (and lipo cells) only, and not through the charger. The power plug connections of the charger are in fact also short circuited, but that isn't a problem with the charger in standby mode. (IAR 80's drawings also show that the red and black balance plug wires are connected to the read and black power wires.)

Moo's 2nd (Zap!) drawing contains a mistake: the two red wires at the left side of the power harness' "A" socket should be swapped. After all, the short red wire between the "A" and "B" sockets will always connect the positive terminal of one 3S pack to the negative terminal of the other pack. With the swap in place, it's easy to see that the charger connections play no role in enabling the short circuit current to flow. (Moreover, I doubt that the charger would allow "smoke level" currents to pass through it when in standby mode.)

Well, enough of flogging this by now decaying horse. Thanks to IAR 80 for reminding us how easy it is to overlook what can happen when plugging power and balance plugs into wire harnesses of one kind or another. Perhaps this tale will prevent someone out there from making a similar mistake. One final thought: imagine that someone uses these harnesses to combine two 3S packs and by chance, gets it right twice in a row. Third time his luck runs out and zap! What used to work so well suddenly works no more... Then it's even harder to figure out what happened.
