Theres something I most certainly don,t understand .

I have a JC-28cc engine that needs a home . So I thought I would order an ARF from the LHS . I choose the GreatPlains BigStick 160 , simple plane , no big deal .

1 ) price of plane
2 ) taxes Fed + Prov
3 ) extra shiping charge $85 + Tax , Fed and Prov

I have to pick up plane at my time and expence ( 1 1/2 hrs +gas )

Great Hobbies

1 ) price of plane
2 ) Tax Fed
3 ) $80 , delivered to my door ( 450 miles away )

Here,s my question : if great Hobbies has it , and I were to pick it up :

Price of plane + Tax,s , Fed and prov .

Have I missed something here or does the LHS NOT want my bussiness .

Just exactly WHAT have I missed here ?

Re: Priceing /Shipping

Hot topic: one LHS doesn't want to stock anything as online "shops" can under price anything he would have in stock. Therefore, the LHS doesn't have any business and will go under :=( I would prefer to buy from the LHS; see and buy. The online sites have little overhead and can "drop ship". However, there's so much competition out there that even they can't compete as their margins are so low. One online guy quit as he realized that it didn't pay to stock items, pack, and go out to CanadaPost to ship; the situation was aggravated by having to stock parts which became white elephants within weeks of stocking. Then there's these forums where items are sold much below market price from private owners..... then there's Craig's list and eBay.......

Re: Priceing /Shipping

the one thing you are missing is that great hobbies IS also a LHS to some. They have a store in edmonton and I believe one out east. I do not believe it is their policy to drop-ship, except for certain special order things mabee.

It comes down to volume. I used to operate a small LHS - it only serviced myself and two other flyers, so it turned out to be a dismal business failure... but evan at that time, I was hard pressed to find a motor or radio, or plane that I could buy as a dealer at prices lower that the mail-order shops. If I was to buy volume... ie dozens of the same arf kit at once, i could get enough of a deal that I could make a couple bucks on a sale.

I know it sucks... i am an impulse buyer too.... I go to the lhs (which is usually Great hobbies) to buy a servo extension and end up leaving with a trunk full of goodies and MUCH less room left on my visa....

You can visit the LHS when it comes in and if damaged in any way, they should look after return (though some may not). Mail order, you are on your own to deal via phone and photos.

Re: Priceing /Shipping

It's quite simple, buying power. Great Hobbies is spending millions of dollars every year in product, your Local hobby shop probably doesn't even spend 100K in a year. Depending on how big your LHS is, they may not even get a dealer price break from some places. I don't remember exact numbers, but some of these places require your initial order to be 30K or more before you're set up as a dealer. If it's a really small hobby store, they can't afford to do that.
All comes down to numbers, it's really hard for a small guy to compete with the million dollar business's.
