Do you build your own battery packs.

I do my own LiIo, NiMh, Nicad and A-123 packs. I also rebuild batteries for power tools and I am going to try replacing the cells in my laptop. I don't use any LiPos at the current time.

It is $117.00 plus tax for the laptop battery which makes it worthwhile to rebuild the pack with some 1600 ma LiIo cells from an industrial pack. Originals are only 1400 ma.

Which type of cells do you use the most.

Lithium Polymer (LiPo)

LIon Ion (LiIo) - usually these are cells from industrial tool battery packs

A123 or similar chemistry

Alkaline (Duracell etc)

Note: I actually know someone who does use alkaline Duracells in the flight packs in his small aircraft. One pack last a long time and the cells are less than $1.00 each.

Don't make my own

Re: Poll on battery packs

I use all of the above.
Some of my low tech radios use Nicad, and they work fine with them so I wont bother changing them yet.

Most of my other transmitters (ie DX7 and JR7202) use Nimh

For my airborne packs, NiCad and Nimh as appropriate

and for my electric planes, helis and Jets, I use Lipo's in all of them

Re: Poll on battery packs

I have been making up my own battery packs, Ni-Cad & NiMH for a good number of years now. I purchase cells by the box of 50 cells with tabs. I have never had a battery pack failure since making my own packs.

I lost a brand new CG Sukhoi due to a pack failure. When I disassembled the new pack, I found one of the spot welded tabs and come loose. I swore I would not have that happen again ever!

After talking to Red Scholfield at a battery seminar, as to his recommendation for a redundant battery setup, I also use two battery packs for the RX in even my smallest airplanes. One pack plugged into a switch harness and then plugged into the normal battery slot of the Rx, the second pack, again plugged into its own switch harness and plugged into any other empty slot in the Rx. This setup has worked perfectly for me for almost 15 years now and I have never lost another plane due to battery failure of any kind.

I haven't tried assembling LiPo packs yet. I figure I get Lipo packs cheep enough through HK that for the present, I see no need to do so. But, ya never know.

I think my next dabbling will be with the A123 packs which seems to be the way most folks are going now other than with Lipo!
