Wow, that cylinder must have been smoking!

Broken spring I can see being more common. I have had parts break on engines not abused or mistreated... crankpins, rods, piston rings, wrist pins, etc.

On susequent investigation, I have found that the rod that activates the tappits was somehow getting knocked off the centre point of the adjustment screw. This was holding the tappit down not allowing the valve to close fully. I don't know how this was happening, so I adjusted the clearance, tightened everything up and now hope that all will be good.
Can I retire now?

That can happen if the valve sticks open. As recommended, check for obstructions that may have been stuck between the valve and seat.

Also, does the rocker area look well lubed?
I know there's money in aviation........I put it there!
