For what most people print I highly recommend laser printers.

The vast majority of people never print in colour. The majority of what people print is black and white text on plain paper. Laser printers have very sharp text and cost a fraction of what a print costs from an inkjet printer.

I felt pretty bad when I had to throw away my old HP laserjet 3 a few years back. The cost of getting a network card for it was about the same as a new printer with networking built in. That printer had printed over 30000 pages according to its counter.

Hey byrocat try this with your old ribbons. Get an ink stamp pad for rubber stamps, hold the cartridge vertical with the ribbon laying on the inked pad. Use a ballpoint pen with a nice smooth cap and rub the ribbon four or five times. The ribbon will darken up as it picks up the ink. Turn the little winder thing for a new piece of ribbon and repeat. It takes a while but it works. I will let you watch TV while you are doing this.
