I have an old Atlas lathe, it never ceases to amaze me the level of craftsmanship somebody can achieve with too much time on their hands!

Model engineering is a great hobby. I got into it when I was still in college and purchased a Taig lathe used. Even on that small thing I made a ton of parts for my planes and helicopters (including stuff like aluminum swashplates, diesel conversion heads for engines, etc).

Best thing I ever did was invest in a larger lathe that had thread cutting ability, and then a few verticle milling machines an other tooling.

If you have the perseverance and time, you can figure out how to make a LOT of things.. and sometimes better than you can buy them
