battery upgrade help ?

Hay everyone, not sure if I am dreaming and grasping at straws or not. However my question is. I own a blade 400 which comes with a Li-Po 3S 11.1V 1800mAh. It has about four and a half min. of flight time. Can I upgrade to a 4S,5S, or 6S without dammageing the electronics? I know it will hinder its flight capabilities due to weight.
If at first you don't succeed hide all evidence that you tried.

Re: battery upgrade help ?

Increasing voltage/# of cells without taking into account the rest of the power system will result in damaged motors, ESC's, etc due to excessive current draw and voltage.

If you want more flight time, increase the mAh of your battery but keep the # of cells (3S) the same.

Re: battery upgrade help ?

How old is the battery?
Have you measured the capacity or just read the sticker?
It may be much lower than 1800mAh

Re: battery upgrade help ?

What type of flying? Obviously, hard 3D will draw more amps.

Upping the cell count will up both the voltage and size, (weight) of the battery. In some cases this can be self defeating, epecially in helis where a great majority of the power is used for lift.

You can use a BEC capable of the higher voltage to power the radio and control system, but now your ESC and motor must also be capable of handling it, as well.

In your case, I would suspect the low flight time is a result of a battery source problem, either a worn out pack, (high cycle count or one that was discharged too far) or one that simply does not have the amp capacity to carry the load, (low C rating). For your app you really need at least a 20C pack. On that note I have built several "Baby 450's" and average 9 minutes hover and basic flying from a 1500MAh pack.

There is also the chance you are not running efficiently, such as too tight a mesh between the main gear and pinion and/or too tight a tail drive belt. One way to check would be to feel if the battery, ESC or motor are too hot to touch at the end of a flight.

Moo is right. A good balance charger can tell you how many MA total are required to rewind, giving you an indication of the health of the pack and each cell.
I know there's money in aviation........I put it there!
